I was riding my GS at about 70 mph in a strong wind that was hitting me from about 10 - 11 o'clock, viewed from the rider's perspective. I felt something hit my left leg. The left plastic tank sidecover had worked its way loose and bent the metal mounting brackets about 90 degrees. I had noticed earlier that the front lower mount, a plastic fastener that turns to lock, was providing basically no holding power.

Has anybody experienced this? Is BMW aware? Did I mess something up?

The plastic sidecover was undamaged. The rear metal sidecover is probably toast.

Yes, and for 2007 they went to using a screw in that location.

I've heard that some dealers covered it coming off under warranty. Complain to your dealer about the plastic screws vibrating loose and the safety risk. It's obvious BMW was aware of it and that's why they changed it to a metal torx bolt.

Thanks for the reality check. I'm always concerned that I've made some mistake.
