K12 shift linkage problem

Just wanted to see if there is any validity to the rumor
about the shift linkage breaking on the K1200LT bikes? Seems I saw in a magazine how it happened to several people around the 20k to 30k mileage. One guy went and bought the part before going on a trip.
Anyone experienced this problem?

I haven't had the problem. I inspect the linkage on my bike periodically when I have the bellypan off. My bike has 37K.

The parts look exactly the same as the linkage used on my '86 R65. I think someone on k1200lt.net even said you can get similar looking parts from McMaster-Carr Industrial Supply (http://www.mcmaster.com) if you want to carry spares.
