Another BMW-noob question. I'm getting ready to do my first-ever valve adjustment on my 2005 R12RT and was planning to synch the carbs afterwards. The Haynes manual shows two vacuum ports with rubber covers over them. My bike has vacuum hoses attached to these ports. Do I just pull those hoses off and plug in the TwinMax? Do those hoses go somewhere that's easier to reach (like up under the seat or somewhere not under plastic)? If I unplug the hoses does it mess up anything else (vacuum advance, etc...)?
Experienced counsel is always appreciated...

TC..
No carbs on a fuel-injected bike... they're called "throttle bodies" (AKA "TB")
I suspect once you get the valves adjusted the TBs will fall right into place as far as sync. You adjust the right side one if it needs adjustment.. and don't worry about sync below 2k RPM - that is controlled by the computer controlled stepper motor bypass circuits. You want to do the cable adjust (if needed - mine has never needed it) at about 2-2.5K RPM.
The hoses can be removed and left dangling - they are the emissions hoses and will have no effect on how the bike runs as long as you have the twin-max connected in place of them. I know of no easier place to connect the twin-max.. but I'm not that familiar with RT's. It's possible there is - but I think the best place to connect is at the device you're adjusting, so.. the TB's seem the natural place.

Adjust valves prior to throttle body sync. Then, follow instructions on calibrating the TwinMax unit. Finally pull the rubber plugs and connect the TM. Run throttle up to your desired RPM...I set mine at about 4200RPM. Adjust if necessary. I'm willing to predict no adjustment will be needed. Piece of cake.
I've thought of running extension hoses out of the fairing to test TBS, but then if adjustment is needed you still have to remove the fairing, so...maybe no gain.
Good luck.

I'm watching Jim's DVD right now in preparation for adjusting my valves and TB's on tuesday. I bought the bike in January with 9600 miles on it and no major service outside of oil changes have been done since the 600 mile service. It will be my first time doing both but I'll have friends helping who have done it before. This forum has been a great source of advice and information. Keep it up:clap
