View Full Version : '96 R11RT Frt wheel rattle

I am getting a distinctive rattle off the front wheel of the RT. I think it's either the speedo sensor or ABS sensor.

It used to be a little "ticky ticky ticky" sound that you could pick up from 25-40, but now it's a little more rattle like but still seems to be coming from the same spot; I think just off the disc right around the speedo sensor.

I was told initially this was a normal sound but other '96 RT owners have said they don't hear on theirs.

Anyone have any ideas or leads for me?

Could it be the buttons that attach the disks to the wheel? They are consumables.

I replaced the buttons on the front discs of our RS at about 60K. They were rattling like crazy. There's a thread up here in Oilheads that shows how to do it.

Thanks Fish & Dave! That's exactly what it is.

oldcarkook,
I have a little suggestion to add to Dave and Fish's suggestion. When you replace the anti-rattle buttons(these are the ones with the wire spring-clip), move them all one hole clockwise on the disk. I've done this job on several bikes and after the second set of rollers, the disk carrier can get grooved by the anti-rattle springs and you may never get the old ones out. Here's the addendum I sent to TC for the IBMWR site......

NOTE: When you replace the rollers, it is a good idea to reinstall the rollers with the spring-clip (3 per rotor) one hole to either side of the original hole. The spring clips WILL wear a groove in the carrier (but not the stainless rotor) and allow the other 9 rollers to wear prematurely. Keep the rotor and carrier in the original relationship by marking it with a grease pencil or crayon before disassembly. I had no problems replacing the rollers with NO disassembly of the front wheel. Work your way around the rotor and replace one roller at a time. Every 4th roller is a spring-clip roller.

Here's a series of pictures of the way I did it. If you wanted to change the alignment like Mick suggests, you can just take all the buttons out at once and rotate it. You'll probably still want to make an alignment mark so you can track how far you move the disc.

Errrr Dave,
You might want to read that paragraph again. You don't rotate the rotor, you just move the anti-rattle rollers one hole either way to keep them from wearing a groove in the carriers.

If they are called ANTI-rattle buttons, then why do they rattle? http://204.193.156.25/forum/smiles/next/biglaugh.gif
