View Full Version : Putting in the new hyperpros

Shocks are getting delivered tomorrow. In anticipation I went ahead tonight and took off the front shock. SO FRIGGIN EASY. I was a little apprehensive as I am a relatively amatuer wrench. But that was easier than changing a tire on a car.
Seat off. Tank off. (quick disconnects make that super easy) shock off. Just gotta get my package tomorrow and throw on the new one and then I am off to do the rear. That is a little more involved since more parts gotta come off. i.e. the rear wheel, seat guide, etc.
Back on the road soon.

Done. Back on the road.
Really easy to do. I used the ADV GSOIA instructions (http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/GSOIAv1.2.pdf). Now all I need to do is go for a ride and find out how worthwhile that investment was.
Just in time for the crazy summer gas prices. :dance :burnout

I tried out some used shocks on my GS. They didn't work out (problem with rear). This meant I'd removed and installed the shocks twice in an afternoon. VERY easy.
Why'd you go with the Hyperpros instead of X?

I'm working with Klaus at EFM Performance Imports to replace my rear OEM shock with a Hyperpro. I asked Klaus why he's now recommending Hyperpros over Wilbers and he says the Wibers had leakage problems (he rebuilds Wilbers so he sees a lot of leaking shocks) but the Hyperpros do not. Says they use a superior coating on the sliding piston that reduces friction on the seals, making it a superior product.
Since the after-market parts cost less than OEM, replacing BMW shocks with a better after-market product really is a no-brainer!

Simple...
Klaus is about 30 minutes away from me. I had heard good things. Looked at my options and you end up spending the same either way. The difference is minimal. If I had trouble, I could go see Klaus. Klaus has a great reputation and per his recommendation I went with the hyperpros.
If/When they need a rebuild, I don't have to go far to get it done.

BrianDitto on Klaus's reputation, integrity and location. He gave me a tour of his facility and personally installed the new shock on my bike last week. Great guy. :thumb

Not discounting what Klaus had to say about the Wilbers (though mine has 50,000+ and never a sign of any kind of problem)- but all previous communications about his no longer selling Wilbers was:
Wilbers dumped him as the importer when they demanded that he sell only Wilbers and no other brand (he was then looking to begin selling HyperPros as a less expensive alternative to Wilbers), but would not give him exclusive distribution rights to their product in the US. They wanted all or nothing from him as his supplier, but were unwilling to give him the same treatment as their seller. Pretty shoddy business behavior- but i believe the estrangement had NOTHING to do with quality of product. i suspect those comments have more to do with the foul taste left in Klaus' mouth than anything else.

Hey Brian,
I'm about to push the button with Klaus and the hyper pros... I'm interested in your ride report..
Has anyone done a comparison between hyperpros and Ohlins..... Max's is running a great deal on Ohlins right now.... I think I saw the price to be around $1,500 for both front and rear for my GS

Mitch, with Tax, shipping, and the remote preload adjuster it ran 1553.64.
If you want to take a run down here anytime and take it out, just let me know. I am always around during the daytime weekdays. Weekends either Sat or Sun I am working in Lakewood and the bike sits there on whatever day I am there.
Give me a shout.

How long did it take Klaus to get your shocks configured for you?
I'm trying to get him to expedite a new rear shock for my RT. I figure since it's in the shop with the paralever off the bike, there is no time like the present to replace the worn stock shock with a superior after-market product - but Klaus said at first it will take two weeks to get the shock made to order and my bike will be out of the shop before that - I hope!
He said he'd see how quickly he could get one made and I'm waiting on his response as I type this.

the swap out is easy (DIY!!), so no need to worry if the shock arrives after the bike is returned to you.

He said 3 to 4 weeks for me. I ordered on the 7th. They put orders in on Wednesdays so it didn't go in till the 9th. Got it yesterday the 24th. Front and rear off and on. First time ever. not a beginner wrench but definitely no pro. Total time maybe 2 hours. Toughest part was trying to get the pre-loader mounted. Tiny spaces, big fingers, washers, nuts, bolts. But it is on.

Okay - I'm going to try and put the rear on myself if it will take a couple of weeks to get the replacement shock. It will be a fun adventure if nothing else!

Just got back from a short little errand across town. A whopping 7 miles round trip, but I made it count. What a difference in stability in the turn. Undulations in the road surface and what not are hardly noticable now. Whereas in the past on my worn out stockers I was always aware and felt like the bike was going to get squirrely.
All is well. Looking forward to a real ride.

BrianBrian, Congrats, man!
Sounds like after the 12th will be perfect to run some roads in Western Jersey!

Belquar,
Could you get the top front bolt to torque 43NM?
I just put the Hyperpros on my bike. Easy install until that top nut on the threaded rod wouldn't torque... it just turned the whole rod and spring assembly. I left it as tight as I could, and sent an email to Klaus. Plus the whole spring preload adjustment is up where you couldn't put the special wrench on it anyway????? Did they build it upside down? I did have them add .5" in height which works great.
But did I miss something?

I didn't have any troubles. Did you make sure to move the rubber bushing and washer over to the new shock from the old one. Mine torqued up fine. I put some loctite on it as well.

Yes, I moved three parts on top, (rubber bushing, washer and nut) and two below( rubber bushing and 1" metal pipe). I wonder why it just rotated. I guess I'll need to talk to Klaus.

Just got an email from Klaus. He's going to try and have a Hyperpro 460 shock with remote pre-load adjuster shipped out on Tuesday so it will arrive in time to be installed on my disassembled bike at the dealer.
I couldn't be happier with his customer service - truly above and beyond the call of duty!

Shocks are great, high quality and Klaus was responsive (fast) with help on the torque issue.
The bike feels brand new and corners like it never has before.
