Got it in my head I need a r1100s. Never have ridden one, how comfy are they in everyday riding? Have a r1150 gs now that I am keeping and have always have had stardards(r75,bandit 1200,dual sports, ect). Not looking for race replica kind of sport bike. Just a little sportier.

i've always been a sport-touring kind of rider (R100S, R100RS, K75S, K1100RS, etc.) I have put over 60,000 on my '01 R1100S- commuting miles, canyon miles, x-c miles, sea-to-shining-sea miles, Deals Gap miles, even some dirt road miles (Moki Dugway in Utah as the most extended of any dirt).
A GS would be better in the dirt, my K11Rs was better at droning across the vast prairies- but my S is the "best" overall BMW for me that I've ever had. It just suits me to near perfecton, and does most everything i could ask of it (tho not great in the dirt, nor as a 2-up tourer, but many will do use it for that).

A great choice in my opinion, but my ride is a 2004 R1100S. Starting with the high bars and adding a set of bar backs, Mine is a great ride.

I have bad knees and I could do a 600 mile day on mine. It's a cool bike.

I still like my yellow, 1999 R1100s but I think the r1200s looks much better - leaner and not so front heavy looking. But to be honest I never realized how heavy and heavy-handling these bikes are until I bought a Ducati.
The nice package to look for included heated grips, ABS, and something else...luggage racks? And the engine guards are a nice option.
One of the magazines has a one-page column every month called something like Used Gems or some-such,and last month they picked the R1100s. Either Rider, Motorcyclist, or Cycle World. I think I still have it.
It's Motorcyclist and called Smart Money:
" 1999 BMW R1100S $8340
BMW's sportiest choice by far, coupling typical BMW comfort and luxury with enough punch from the 1085cc flat-twin."

I use mine to commute 140 miles a day round trip. 600 or 700 miles a day is no problem. Go for ABS and heated grips if you can.
:heart love my R1100 s
I bought my 04 R1100S a little over 1 year ago. I have only taken day trips on it so far. I use my K75s for my overnight trips. However, I think I will eventually get luggage for the R1100s as my full day trips on it were pretty comfortable. I know a lot of people recommend the bar risers, but I really do not have a problem with the low bars.
I did install a Wunderlich peg lowering kit and that turned out to be a good idea. But what I think I really need more than anything is a replacement for the stock seat. I am constantly sliding towards the tank.
There are some times when the stock windshield allows a lot of buffeting at higher speeds, but that problem seems to also be related to the direction of the wind.
I definitely can cover a lot more miles on it than my K75s, but that is not why I always ride. But I usually take the R1100S when I ride with my friend who has an FJR1300.
I have the Mandarin and grey paint with the painted wheels. It really turns a lot of heads around here who have never seen this bike before.

A fun bike to ride and looks great too! Unlike the new 1200S, which is a full-up sport bike, the 1100S is considered a sport-tour and can take the hard bags. Besides my bike coming with the hard bags, the original owner installed a Ztechnic exhaust system which eliminated the cat. converter and produces a great exhaust note. Mine also has ABS and heated grips, which I highly recommend. An awesome boxer!:heart

The stock seat of the 1100 is torture because it slides you into the tank (obviously an easy $500 fix). The ergos on teh1200 are also slightly more relaxed. I rode my 1200 600 miles last weekend and wanted to keep going. Couple of hours on the 1100 and it's back in the garage. YMMV

I've always ridden sport bikes as tourers/commuters. But I find that position very comfy.
Compared to the japanese bikes, the geometry on the "s" bikes is laid back.

I just bought a R1100S after riding a 1200GS for the last year and a half. The GS was a great bike, just didn't suit me I suppose.
I always wanted a R1100S and found a 04 Boxer Cup Prep that I am extreamely happy with. I find it to be very comfortable and actually like the stock seat and my ability to slide around on it. The GS had non-slip material for the seat cover which would stop your pants from going anywhere, but your body would still shift around inside them...crushing male anatomy in a way that was not pleasurable at all! I went to one of those race bike schools a couple of years ago and they suggested sitting right up against the tank, which I tried and still do to this day. Makes for more comfort and control even at 6'1".
It's great for commuting with the luggage and my wife is quite comfortable on the back (although i did get a non-slip cover for her part of the seat which is great for girls/passengers). Mine also came with Ohlin's which are truely amazing compared to stock shocks.
The used prices are really good on them right now, they really seem to be a bargain. My only dislike with the bike is the need for and the design of the fast idle lever, but that's mostly from getting spoiled on the newer EFI systems on the 1200 series bikes.
Good luck with your search...
