background- 2001 R1100SA. 65k miles. installed new alternator belt a few hundred miles ago. PC680 is 3 years old, generally kept on Battery Tender if sitting more than a week or so.
Riding along, out of nowhere the ABS light lights start alternate flashing. turn key off to reset, bike won't start- chatta chatta chatta from starter button. able to bump start bike (she's a heavy beatch on level pavement, lemme tell ya!), ABS still alternating, but pretty much figured that was excpected snafu. riding along, running fine, for about 1/2 mile, then starts to run funky- skipping/lurching, charging light glimmering, barely able to maintain operation. tach goes out, as does speedo. charge light comes on full, bike dies. get help to come for me. sit for 45 mins or so, and bike starts right up (!), but ABS still alternating. trailer it home (Thanx Wiff!!), bike restarts again, no problem, but ABS still dancing. now there's no charging light at all, even at start up. bulb tested good.
have not looked at battery voltage or alternator function yet. letting shop deal with it.
thoughts?

Perhaps when you installed the new belt you buggered up the wires going to the Hall sensors. Yeah thats what you did!

Those aren't quite classic broken alternator belt symptoms, but I'd definitely take the cover off and have a look in there.

Is the big main ground wire properly secured and in good shape?

so it turned out to be a shredded alternator belt. short life span on that one- about 300 miles. damn.
kinda sucks, but a lot cheaper than an alternator rebuild. didn't even eat the battery.

Some of those things seem to last forever, others not so much. Glad it was a cheap fix.

I bought a '96 R1100RT recently. Rode it home (100 miles) was fine, took it another 200 miles, no problem. Next day went to start it and it was dead. No juice at all. Got a new BMW wet battery, lasted another 100 miles, then wouldn't run. Finally sucked it up and took it to the dealer. They said the alternator belt was bad, and that I hadn't charged the battery properly. Well, the next day from the dealer, went to start it and it was dead again.
