Greetings--
Just returned from a two-day ride into southern Vermont on my 1995 R1100GS, and on my way home I realized that the speedometer dial stopped working. The tac is working fine, as is the rest of the RID. Any thoughts for how to diagnose or repair?
Many thanks,
Peter

The speedometer is driven from a collar on the left side of the front wheel. This collar has a nylon gear inside. The gear wears and eventually fails. It will fail much sooner, however, if someone, say while changing the front tire, doesn't get the collar lined up properly on reassembly. There's a cast notch in the outside of the collar that should line up around a finger that's cast on the fork leg.

It's easy to check the cable. Just disconnect from the drive at the wheel and pull the cable from the sheath. Chances are that what you remove won't be long enough to reach the speedometer. Replace the entire cable. Took me about a half-hour, but had to remove the headlight to get to the rear of the meter.
