1150RT Broken headlight adjuster?

Last night while trying to adjust the headlight (up/down), I encountered some resistance in the knob and then something broke loose. Very little force was involved; I don’t think anything was stripped. I haven’t even started to investigate yet, but I’m thinking that whatever links the threaded rod from the knob to the lever connected to the headlight housing may have broken or come apart. Any thoughts?

OK, EXACTLY the same thing just happened to mine last night. The knob on the dash now spins with no resistance and does nothing. Doesn't seem to be connected to the cable anymore.

So what broke, and how do I fix it?
