I have a 2004 r1150rt. Do I really need to remove the gas tank for battery installation? Any insightful tips are much appreciated.

Will that also work for a 2004 r1150rs?

I don't know. I'm only familiar with my RT.

Should be the same, even easier on the RS. On my 94 R1100RS I remove the seats, the air filter box cover, the left side fairing/body panel, and the air intake tube. Then the battery slides out because the cables are long enough to get the battery to almost rest on the LH TB.

To remove the air intake tube you will have to take off the air filter box cover. I use an upside down plastic garbage can next to the left side of the bike to support the battery while I'm undoing the cables.

Soooooo, now that I have been waiting for a week or so to get my new battery in the mail. There they sit in the magnetic tray the screws I took out Duh any idea on the long and short ones for placement???
By the way make sure you lube and tighten the cables that was the only thing wrong with mine, now I will have a spare battery,DUH!!!!

When you replace the battery, get a garden tractor battery cable and attach it to the positive post and insulate the unattached end for a easy place to jump or be jumped in case of a dead battery.

Hallisbruce -
I replaced my 2004 1150RT battery just a few days ago. Believe it or not....its the 3rd BMW battery that that has been in the bike. So much for BMW gell quality !!
Anyway...the 2 "longer screws" go into the same diameter screw holes which are "near the mirror" & dashboard. I believe that all of the other are the same size.

I personally wouldn't worry about the screw lengths. I've long since shuffled mine around any old way and nothing bad has happened yet.:doh

Battery installation complete! :clap Everything went great thanks to everyone's great tips. The hardest part was taking off and putting back the side panel.

That was my experience also - I didn't even realize there were different lengths until I had the plastic off half a dozen times.
I had an 1150 R and as I recall, had to remove the tank on that one, but not on the RT.

It's probably a good idea to keep the long screws away from the top of the fuel tank. I put the long ones on the foot peg plate, behind the mirror and in the nose on the RT.
