I heard on NPR today that 17 skiers died on the slopes in Colorado last year. Just for comparison, :type I Googled this: "Colorado - Of the 41 motorists who died in 2007 traffic crashes, 11 were motorcyclists. The most motorcycle fatalities the two counties had seen in recent years were in 2003 and 2004, when there were nine deaths each. There were eight in 2006."

I guess you are safer on a motorcycle than skiing! :bolt

I've been involved in both activities for over 40 years, and am an ex-alpine ski instructor and ex-patroller.

I am not qualified to analyze accident statistics, but even a non statistician can figure out dozens of different parameters to analyze the risk in each sport. Regardless of that, I think motorcycling is way more dangerous than skiing. The typical ski area skier death around here involves somebody losing an edge and hitting a tree. The typical non - ski area death involves avalanches.

Last year one of the top motorcycle safety experts in North America was killed in a collision with a deer.

For me, the biggest riding risks are: 1. collision with an animal or other object in a corner, and 2. hitting road debris in a corner.

In terms of raw numbers, in my home city of a million, about 5 to 10 people are killed each year on bikes. In the (developed) ski areas west of us, we lose a skier about every other year.
