When changing the oil in the final drive how do you know it's full, do you fill it to the fill hole like the trans?
Thanks in advance.

There are two ways. You can check in the owner's manual for the exact amount and pour that in, or you can park it upright and level and fill it until the oil reaches the bottom of the threads of the fill hole. For whatever reason, this does not turn out to be the same amount of oil for me.

According to the manual you measure out .23 liters (230cc) of oil and pour it in.That is the amount for a oil change.

The Service and Technical Manual for my R1100RS does not really say HOW to refill the FD . . . it just states the QUANTITY of oil for a FD oil change (0.24 US quarts/0.23 liters), and does not tell you how to check for the correct oil level. However, both the Haynes manual and the Clymer manual say that the correct oil level is even with the bottom edge/lower threads of the FD fill hole.
Since the lower threads of the fill hole guidance would always put the oil at the same specific level in the FD, which ultimately seems the most important criteria, and this is consistent with my K75S BMW Riders Manual, which does tell you how to check for the correct FD oil level (the same lower threads), I would use this as the guidance for how much oil to put in the FD, and treat the 0.24 quarts as a good estimate of the quantity needed.

Thanks for the replies. I was pretty sure it was to the threads, but in never hurts to consult the collective knowledge.
