Last year I rode 2300 miles one way from British Columbia to the Wisconsin Rally, camping 2-up with my daughter, so..... to make time we slabbed it pretty much the whole way. We did end up with a mileage award, which was pretty cool.

This year the rally's way closer so I'm considering avoiding all freeways all the way to the rally (no promises on the way home). I'm still camping and riding 2-up (this year with my 11 year old son), so it'll be slower but I'm hoping much more relaxed and scenic.

I have a feeling that I'll be one of the few riding back roads to the rally, but maybe I'm wrong. Are there any other slower-paced souls out there considering shunpiking to the rally? Why? What's your story? Is it worth it?

i'm riding from NY to Gillette and plan on taking four days to get there. the first two days will be nothing but secondary/backroads, which will get me into Ohio. as much as i would love to ride the rest of the way on backroads, at this point i will need to make time so i'll hit the slab. i have not figured out how i will make the return trip, but i will have more time so it may be 100% backroads home.

Paul and I love the backroads and opt for them whenever time allows. We'll be meandering back from Alaska
on the way to Gillette by way of California and friend Lindsey's 75th birthday party.

The only time I hit the slabs is when I realize that I said I would be there two days ago and people are commenting "I thought you said....".

My favourite settings on the GPS are "Shortest Distance" and "Avoidances: highways; interstates; toll roads".
