I charged my battery on my 85 K100, when I went to connect the cables, Neg. first of course, I had sparking from the Pos. terminal and the engine wanted to turn over. The key was out of the switch. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Starter relay, located under the tank in the relay box has welded the contacts shut. This is due to low battery voltage. Check the search feature on this forum. there is a web site that has the Bosch relay for $30. I paid $56 at Beemer Boneyard. It is a 75 amp relay. Probably can find it through Google.

I think the BMW relay welded like the post above. BUT, the negative post is the last one you should reconnect!
Think about it...if you short the wrench to the frame while connecting the pos post and the neg post is not connected...no problem. If you short the neg post after the pos post is connected...no problem.
Neg post off first and back on last.

It still wanted to spark and turn over when reconnecting the battery, this time Pos first. I banged on the started a few times then reconnected without a problem.

You were lucky. The starter relay is nowhere near the starter - and the only way it will try to turn over when you connect it up is if the starter relay is welded shut.

For future info - the starter relay is in the E-box which is under the fuel tank. It's the big relay in the right rear corner with big red wires going to it.
