Last night we went our with our close friends. He leaned over the table and said "I need to tell you something."

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh310/RJM2096/BigBeer.jpg

I thought he was going to tell me , "I have food in my teeth", "my zipper is open", or "look at that babe over there". What he told me was that when he was at my house last weekend "I served him sour beer". The Bud-Lite was a year past the expiration date.

I am gonna have to work on that. Time to pitch my guest beer supply.

Bud Lite has half the p*ss content of rugular Bud. Friends don't let friends drink AB.

I usually go with whatever I think will be the crowd pleaser for guest beer, but I always have a variety on hand.

I like beer in a can, and really cant tell the difference between the taste. Also, something about beer in a can is nostalgic, and I like to buy an occasional 6-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon, Schlitz, Bush, etc. It brings back memories of the good 'old high school days in Upstate NY - When the drinking age was 18, and we used to freeze out butts off out in the woods drinking Old Milwaukee, Christian Schmidt's Golden Classic, Meister Brau or some other $1.98/6-pack swill :bottle

since moving to nyc i drink mostly crappy beer again (pbr/bud mainly) since that's all anyone seems to drink when they go out (it's also a decent money saver). at home, i still try and retain some dignity and drink more "top shelf" stuff, although i don't have beer in the house much.

a good beer for company who likes beer is Sierra Nevada, IMO it's a very "approachable" ale. for those who don't like beer, Corona or a beer like Josh mentioned (Labatt/Molson) should do the trick.

with golden base and snowy cap.
The foamy stuff I drink all day

I can't imagine beer being in my house for a year past expiration!

I usually have enough of my own stock, usually Leinies or Capital, both Wisconsin brews, to share with anyone who shows up unexpectedly.

If it's a planned get together, I'll stock up on something like MGD or Mich Golden Light to share. Some people prefer the somewhat neutral flavor of the standard corporate U.S. beers. If they want something expensive or eclectic, they can feel free to bring their own.

But, I can pretty much guarantee that it will never come close to seeing the expiration date before being consumed!:drink

On the extremely rare occasion I do partake a nice New Glarus Spotted Cow or Fat squirrel do nicely. Lienies Red is good but my favorite is New Castles. The ones in the UK, not the detuned ones you get here.

Still can't remember much from the night of Newky Browns and Tequilia that long ago Christmas eve....:hungover :sick

I like a LOT of different beers (I have had many, many, MANY different beers in my life), but I just don't see what all the hubbub is about Leinie's. I don't find it to be a very good beer, at all.

I first purchased some after hearing about it on the forum. Some of it is drinkable (which isn't saying much), but there is actually some I've poured out; which happens very, VERY rarely with me. I'd rather drink Bud than some of Leinie's beer...

For IPA's I like "New Holland Brewings: Mad Hatter IPA":

Leinies = Yeungling = Rolling Rock, etc, etc. They're ok beer, slightly higher up in the rankings than Schlitz, Hamms or PBR, but still, not what i'd call "nice" beers. Truth be told, i'm a little burnt out on anything that tastes too much like Pabst, i've been digging Budweiser lately cause it's such a "soda-ey" beer, lots of refreshing carbonation without a lot of heavy hop or syrup overtones. If i taste hops in the beer, it better have some complexity and usually goes better if i have some food with it.

Tried a new one this week, Rouge's Chocolate Stout. I liked it, less "corny" (that's what i use to describe weird flavored beers) than Young's Chocolate Stout, but, if i'm getting a chocolate stout, i'm looking for a cross between stout and ice cream. this was more stout with a hint of chocolate, so different, but i'm not sure it'll become a regular of mine.

Have you tried Mcsorley's (http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/)? I remember lugging cases of that stuff around Park Slope because it was so cost effective, local (fresh!), and tasted pretty good. But mostly, I was always a Guinness man myself.

As for entertaining guests, I was raised to give the best, which means clean sheets warm from the dryer, fine food and drink and not the slightest pretension towards obligation. I don't even drink, but if I'm entertaining, that means a trip to the store for what my guests prefer. And if I don't know, then I need-to post haste with an error only on the side of extravagance. That's the way I was raised.
Hosting is an honor, privilege and cause celebration in my opinion. But that's just me.

Growing up in Milwaukee, Pabst was the beer of choice. I still enjoy an icey cold one on a hot summer day. Never did care for Leinie or Miller.
There are now a lot of excellent micro brews, but my favorite brew is Goose Island IPA.
I would like to try some Yeungling, but it is not available in Wisconsin.
Closest place to get it would be Tennessee. (560 miles to Clarksville)
Perhaps it is a worthy enough for a beer run on the bike to pick up a case.

There's a Budweiser brewery in Fairfield, CA about 50 miles from my home in Roseville. One day I was at the local Supermarket and the Bud man was making his delivery. I was cruising the beer aisle and he gets my attention and says, " Hey, check out the born on date on this beer" I pick up a 12 pack of bottles and he says, " no, that one" and points to the 12 pack next to the one I picked up. It had todays date on it. " no way" I said, "this beer was made today?" "Yep", he answered", " first time I"ve ever seen a same day delivery". Well, of course I bought the beer and raced home to put a few bottles in the freezer. After they chilled for about 20 seconds, I popped the first one. Now, I'm sure I wasn't thinking clearly, but, damn if that beer didn't taste.........errr........"fresh". Well, I had to have the other one to make sure. Yes, it was really good. The best Bud I could ever recall drinking and since my roommate in college had connections at Allentown Beverage, I drank more Budweiser than any other brand. So, as I sat there and mulled over my good fortune, I realized that my same day beer was aging. Tomorrow it would be twice as old as it was today. Maybe that fresh taste would be gone. I realized that the right thing to do, was not let that beer get stale. With some help from the neighbors, I avoided the travesty :drink :drink :drink :drink :drink :drink :drink :drink :drink :drink :drink :drink

+1 for Yeunling! Also a good ride destination for the tour. There is a good pizza joint within walking distance to get a bite and allow the taste tests to work their way through your system. The Lager is a good guest beer, but I like the Porter or Black and Tan myself. Actually, most of my guests do as well. Lancaster Brewing Company is also a good local brew, their Milk Stout goes well with a nice Porterhouse, or whatever steak you prefer. Bube's Brewery, in Mount Joy, PA is also another local brewer, much smaller batches, for their restraunt/bar only. They used to sell home brew supplies there, but when the home brew craze ended, so did the store.

I think the primary ingredient in Bud is not barley but rice. Now, malted rice is just cheap almost as cheap as corn sugar. I can't understand how Bud can charge the prices they do for their beer when it is made with such cheap ingredients. I may be mistaken but I think in Germany it is against the law to sell beer made with anything but malted barley.

I have home brewed for years and like many home brewers my tastes lean to dark ales the stouter the better. Funny thing is I do enjoy a can of Coors Lite on a warm day. Go figure:whistle

For great microbrew visit Portland, OR as the town boasts about 32 microbreweries.

The Yuengling Lager is not bad for a "standard" American lager. Try their Black & Tan, a mixture of lager and porter. It has more flavor/character than the lager alone, and is a pretty good brew for the price in my book.

I think the primary ingredient in Bud is not barley but rice.

I'm pretty sure that it's corn. To me the flavour of Bud rather resembles corn flakes.

I may be mistaken but I think in Germany it is against the law to sell beer made with anything but malted barley.

Basically correct, although they do have some wheat beers. The law to which you refer is the Reinheitsgebot, which is a beer-purity law dating to the 1600's which makes it one of the oldest laws enforced in the modern world.

I'm about to resume homebrewing after a lapse of several years. The funny thing is that I recently learned that my local club has a rather large number of homebrewers (compared to how many you find in the general population) amongst our ranks. A few of us have gotten together for 'brew nights' in which we stir the kettle and sample something that's ready in the bottle, as well as micros that we may be curious about.

[quote]Funny thing is I do enjoy a can of Coors Lite on a warm day. Go figure:whistle

Yeah everything is better up there, or at least was. It used to be on my list of places I'd like to live.
The beer scene sucks down here. We get a decent selection of imports d micros, but not as good as some places I've visited. And TexSux has precious little in the way of microbreweries, and what few we have aren't terribly inspiring. Most of the people here pretty much live on Bud Light. Lone Star claims to be 'the national beer of Texas,' but Bud Light is far and away the popular and uniquitous choice here. Oh the agony!
