The Human List (Formerly the Man List)

I was talking to a buddy and we were discussing things that all men should do to be a man (yes, some alcohol was involved in the discussion). We changed it to the "Human List" as it is not meant to exclude women. We roughed one out and your input is important to complete it.

This is not a 'bucket list'. A bucket list involves things that you might do knowing you were not long to live. They might be very expensive. These are primarily things anyone can do fairly locally, not involving a lot of cash. It doesn't mean you are accomplished at anything, but that you've done it. For example: ride a motorcycle. Maybe you just take the MSF class or borrow a buddies dirtbike once in your life. Doesn't mean you need to go buy one and ride all the time.

It is not a macho list. It is a list of things we felt everyone should try at least once in their life. You don’t have to be good at them, but try them. That, and some points of honor.

We have:

1) "Consummate" a meaningful relationship (you know what I mean) and love a good partner.

2) Ride a motorcycle

3) Drive a nice sports car

4) Fly something (even under the guidence of a licensed pilot); plane, ultralight, hang glider, balloon, etc.

5) Drive something around a race track

6) Bungee jump

7) Parachute jump

8) Scuba dive or snorkel

9) Hike/climb a mountain

10) Drive a nice boat

11) Be pulled behind a boat (skis, wakeboard, tube, etc.)

12) Snow Ski

13) Go to Europe

14) Successfully draw to an inside straight

15) Go on an odyssey

16) Do something illegal (not necessarily REALLY illegal, even speeding is OK)

17) Bestow true human kindness on another with need

18) Have and encourage Honor and character

19) Be self sufficient (a job, your own place to live, etc.)

20) Shoot a gun

21) Develop a bond with another species (dog, cat, etc.) (Do not combine with #1 !!!)

22) Spelunking

23) Fishing

24) Repelling

25) Surfing

26) Ride a horse

27) Get a decent education

28) Write something (if even just a blog or article)

29) Read

30) Become proficient at one or more things on this list.

Those are excellent! Just what I'm looking for and all will make my new list. Starting a fire without matches is actually something I wish to try. Any book/website with instruction you recommend? Something that doesn't involve me joining the Navy Seals?

To the first poster: Congrats, you win a pony!

If you don't do any of the others, can you keep doing #1 until you have the same count?

What's spelunking. I may have done it but not known?

That's exploring caves.
Can also be associated with #1. ;)

I've done everything except 5, 6, & 7. And 22. Unless taking a tour in a cave counts. I'd like to try 5 someday (can't count go-carts, I assume), but 6 & 7 don't interest me. Something about falling from great heights that I don't find appealing.

I don't know if I've ever been on an odessey. I've always been odd. Does that count?

I'd add:

Go on a safari in Africa.

Honor your father and mother.

Be humbled in the presence of Nature's grandeur. (I started to say a "natural wonder", but it sounds too commercial that way and I don't think it should be limited to someone else's interpretation of what is a "natural wonder".)

Fix something you didn't know how to fix until you started.

Live someplace foreign to you. Doesn't have to be foreign, just outside of your comfort zone.

Learn how to read a map.

Know how to drive a stick shift. (It's amazing how many people can't do these last two).

Nice list.

Done some, will never do others.

But, if I do nothing else, I will consider my life well lived if I can truly be intimate with my wife. No, not only in the ADV Rider sense. But in the sense of each of us really knowing each other.

#4 does a kite count?

#6 and #7- Not ever. Nope, not me.

#9 I've climbed so many above 13,000 that it makes up for NOT doing #6 OR #7!

#15 WTH? wazzit?

#16 All I can say is thank god for statutes of limitations!

#26 Every man should have the opportunity to go on a date with a woman riding horseback! Knicker....And vice versa! One of the finer things I have done in my life, and the one that best dupliccates riding a fast motorcycle faster! NOT a dude ranch bur really riding! Big difference!

#27 Still, and for ever more working towards that goal; every day!

Wow... there are a few on that list that I haven't done yet, but at my age, i've already covered most of them. I guess I need to find some extra things to do with my time. :)

As for having a kid... I'm not sure that would be in anyone's best interests. I have a stunning lack of patience with things like that. I try to keep an open mind, though. It's just that it would cut into my riding time so much. ;)

Things I haven't done on the list are:

3. I've driven lots of "sporty" cars, never a real sports car. I drove a Vette once, but it does say a nice sports car. A Porsche would be my preference.

5. Could combine this with 3.

6. maybe someday

7. see 6

10. not really a big interest of mine, but OK.

11. see 10

14. Not a poker player, so probably not.

25. see 10

I like this list. Actually, I love lists in general. I make them all the time.

I've done quite a few of these things; been to Europe, fired a few guns, ridden horses, explored caves and such.

Here's what I'd add:

Forgive someone who has wronged you.

Make a time capsule for someone to find. Include a journal. Leave clues.

Send someone you love on a scavenger hunt to find you.

Volunteer at a homeless shelter/abuse shelter/etc. Learn to see everyone you come across as a person of value.

Learn to be a listener.

Anonymously give a bit of cash to someone you know who is struggling financially.

Celebrate St. Pats in Dublin.

Love someone that the world finds unlovable.

Choose a role model/hero and emulate his or her best qualities.

You're sweet. :D

And right, IMHO.

My list is really short:

1. Live with curiosity and compassion.

But then I'm not much for grocery lists either. :ha

I really think you need to put "Learn to play a song on the guitar" on the list, or actually learning to play any instrument would be good.

Thinking of my best male role model, my dad, and all he's done for me, I would think the most important thing to add to that "man" list is after every one of those criteria add the words "...with your son." I would be a much different person if my dad didn't have that philosophy when I was growing up.

I've done many, and as some have said, there are some I'll never do...and that's OK.

Here's what left on my "To Do" list:

3.) This is one I definitely hope to do someday.

6.) I REALLY doubt this will ever happen.

7.) See #6 above.

13.) Got my passport, it's just a matter of time.

15.) I assume an odyssey is some type of long trip, probably unplanned. Technically, I don't think I could say I've done this. But, about once a month during the riding season, I just take off for 3 or 4 hours and ride out in the country with no route or destination.

22.) Don't think I've ever done this...at least in the traditional sense. No clue if I ever will or not. Never say never, I guess, unless you're talking about me doing numbers 6 and 7 above!

24.) Never done this myself, but aided some of my Boy Scouts in their efforts at camp. I highly doubt that I'll ever do this on my own...and like I said above, that's OK.

First I have not done #7, Why jump out a perfectly good airplane? I did do the training for it in the service. I don't play poker but I have had some loner Sheepshead and Euker hands. Repelling, Yeah I can be pretty repelling. :brad

How about saving a life? Either figuratively or literally. Whether you perform CPR on someone or help them in their time of need.

* Learn CPR

* Learn to swim (everyone should know how!)

I may think of more later.....

Lessee; check off everything except:

4) Fly something (even under the guidence of a licensed pilot); plane, ultralight, hang glider, balloon, etc.

Given my acrophobia as well as a propensity to hurl :sick in a mere 2G turn, I will probably not.

6) Bungee jump

7) Parachute jump

Acrophobia again. Ain't no way.

12) Snow Ski

That's, like, in snow, right? I don't do winter sports except ice racing - in a nice warm car.

24) Repelling

Jeez, still with the high places. I do not do that s**t. Oh; wait; that would be Rappelling! Repelling? Sure I am! :thumb

25) Surfing

OK; maybe I can do this some time.

It's funny to me that people will gladly hurl their bodies down a long straight of asphalt with appropriate gear, knowing that the gear just helps if you live, and yet they feign away from jumping off bridges or out of airplanes with gear that ensures you live regardless.

Laugh often

Run a sled dog team

Turn everything off and just sit there; even in music, the quiet (rest) is as important as the sounds

Write down the family history, add the photos you've got stashed in a shoebox in the basement, and pass on a scrapbook to the second-next generation (your kids won't care, but their kids might)

Don't do something just because someone suggests it

I used to work with a guy that ran his own skydiving jumping school. He had made hundreds and hundreds of jumps. He thought I was absolutely INSANE for riding a motorcycle; he said he'd NEVER do it.

Fine, but I ain't ever jumping out of airplane, either.

I'm possibly a more avid jumper than motorcyclist. Not in practicality, but mind you, there is no dose of adrenaline more potent from a legal standpoint.

And statistically, it's just plain WAY safer than bikes, too true.

It has to do with control and chance and purpose.

On a motorcycle I have brakes, I can steer, I can stop; I control my own density. Variables out there out of my control that can kill me? Yep, but I still have the ability to make the decision that may ultimately save me or kill me. My choice. I control my bike. Airplane? I jump out; I put all my eggs in one basket. No way can I stop. My brother in law had his shoot twist on him around the back up, and we thought he was gone; no control, just a whole lot luck! When I do something as risky as motorcycling, I want some hand in the outcome, not leave it up to chance.

Purpose. I ride to go somewhere; I ride commute to work every day. I ride for the combo thrill and transportation. Jumping out of a freaking airplane is purely rich man's thrill in life. Even when I was dirt poor, my old Yamaha Virago took me and my head where I wanted to go, up and down. Jumping out of a plane is a rich mans thrill and that’s it; no purpose what so ever.

Ummm ... that's why it's called an irrational fear. :uhoh

It is not the lack of direct control for me because I willingly strap myself into the right seat of BMW club driving students at race tracks and let them fling themselves around at (literally) breakneck speeds. I have been sickened by poor drivers (in my pre-dramamine days) and skidded off track with better ones. I have even ridden through a crash in Road America's notorious Kink. It was no biggie. Just don't ask me to dive off a 3-meter board because I can't. :dunno

I think I get it. You pack your own chute, pick your spot, etc. It's a controlled environment, for the most part.

It's also why some people feel safer on the track with a motorcycle; there are fewer unknowns.

When you hit the street on a motorcycle, who knows what could hit you coming out of a blind curve?

1. Become International Man of Mystery.

2. Save World from Certain Doom.

3. Find True Love. Done..

4. Go to Outer space.

5. Travel Through Time, Backward and Forward.

6. Be Cryogenically Frozen.
