I post this in the spirit of showing how stupid advertisers can be. This rates right up there with "New Coke".

Let's not let this get political. If push came to shove, we should all (Canada, USA, & Mexico) give back this continent to the native indians.

Yes, their apology has been all over the news.

Not much relevance to this list, perhaps not even to "Campfire" where you should have posted this.

I am a little slower than most. So, I really don't get it...:dunno Why are these advertisers stupid??? There must have been a reason they are showing this old map of the North American continent, but without knowing the whole story or seeing the complete ad...

Abolut Vodka (Sweden) used this add in Mexico to promote their brand. They said it was not for viewing by the USA market.

Absolut is a Swedish Company and I mean no offense to the Swedish people, just the humor of it.

Those "native indians" emigrated here just like the rest of the colonists did.

Then there was the baby food company that sold to Africa. On the label was the picture of a chubby little white baby...no racial problem, just that in Africa labels always show what the contents are, just in case folks can't read.

There was the NOVA car, launched in South America, where No Va translates loosely to no go.

The poster campaign for a soap powder in Syria, problem being dirty washing, then washing powder, then white wash, is read in the opposite direction.

Coke's catch line translated as bringing chinese relatives back from the dead...
there's a whole world of poorly thought out or targetted advertising. It isn't a science, just best guesses wrapped in jargon and surrounded with pretentiousness afterall.

In the end I think history will show that possession is 9/10 of the law, and us EuroAmericans will someday be in the minority, so we need to respect all if only for self-preservation.

Again, lets avoid politics.

If "native" means the country of origin, and American refers to the country in which you were born, then I, too, must be Native American. I happen to be of English/Irish decent, but only a few hold that against me.

While we are on the subject, name one country/region/continent that hasn't had some people group living there, then another people group comes in and enslaves or wipes out the others. This has been going on forever. Kind of human nature. If I'm not mistaken, it is happening right now in a number of areas in Africa, as well as other parts of the world, and is usually based on religion.

Of late, I've become a big fan of The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson. (Thank goodness for DVRs.) He has a lot of fun with maps.

In last night's show, as part of a bit, he showed a map of the British Isles. Scotland (where he is from) is labeled "heaven"; Ireland is labeled "leprechauns"; and England is labled "wankers."

It's all in good fun. His main guest was even an English actor. He does this all the time. Part of it is just silly. Part of it is self-deprecation in that his geography is not too good. The American audience seems to think its funny because their knowledge of geography is worse.

The Scots would love to be wankers, but they haven't got the hand, eye co-ordination skills!

Absolut is now owned by the French, so perhaps an image of France with a swastika overlaid would be more humorous for their German customer. :whistle

I live in Stockholm, Sweden, and I wouldn´t mind if the danes took over. As long as they let us drink their Carlsberg as well. :drink

BTW, Absolut Vodka and its swedish owner Vin & Sprit has just been sold to the french Pernod Ricard

That must be a terrible burden to bear, seeing insult where none was intended. Your umbrage and indignation are something you will have to deal with.

At this time I am not aware of any scientific proof that any homo sapiens originated in what is now known as the Americas ( I include North, Central and South). As such, any and all members of the species here now are the result of those who migrated to those locations from elsewhere. Kind of like the more recent migration be it 1600's to 2008.

Lots of folks are "native born" here. I am and even have a shared genetic background to what are collectively termed as "native Americans". Ancestry doesn't define me, my own beliefs and actions are what define me.

I saw some show recently where a person was asked something about a country in Europe, her response was that she thought Europe Was a Country! Ha Ha!

Coming through Arkansas yesterday I saw an ad for an orthodontist on a billboard for braces (for straightening teeth). Being proud of the U of A Razorbacks his web site is www.razorbraces.com
Sounds like a great name for a horror movie.

You think that's good, a few months ago in M'Zippi I saw a billboard for a plastic surgeon, which on one half of the image had a 'strike zone' shot of a woman in jeans and a tube-top, obviously nicely endowed, with a bunch of Mardi Gras beads around her neck. The other half was a solid dark background with bright block letters that said GET MORE BEADS.

...is a failure to communicate.
I'm reminded of the safety poster used in an african mine.
The first frame showed a stick figure person looking at a rock sitting on a stick figure railcar track.
The second frame showed the man picking up the rock.
The third frame showed the man looking at the rock sitting on the ground a short distance away from the railcar tracks.

the message was suppost to be, "When you see a rock on the tracks, pick it up and move it away from the tracks."

Except in the worker's native language, they read from right to left, so the poster said, "Pick up a nearby rock and put it on the tracks."

Ah...communcation...never a dull moment.

In my April 2008 issue of Cycle World on page 13 (?) there is an add for Allstate insurance showing a woman on a motorcycle captioned "This is an Allstate Agent"

She has a scowl on her kisser that would peel paint. Claims adjusters look at you that way, but someone trying to sell me something, no way.

Gilly

Same type on the back cover of the May issue for Allstate. "Buy my insurance or I'm kickin' your ass. Matter of fact I'm kickin your ass first, then I'm forcing you to buy my insurance."
