View Full Version : Here's my question about the ON.

Why isn't there any advertising from the likes of Yamaha, HD, Kwak, or Suzuki? You would think that they would want to reach out to other marques and try to draw them into their fold.
I know, it's a brilliant idea, so try to contain the fawning.

For example, if I were in the 'Zook marketing department, I would put an ad in the ON, showing dragstrip results between a GSXR1000 and a K1200S.
Oh, I'd make sure to publish my MSRP too.

I'm sorry tessler, I'm getting my swingarm chromed and a turbo installed, so it's unlikely I'll be available. If I recall correctly, I also have a fox hunt scheduled that weekend.

Gee, our marketing sales person needs to talk to you.
Or, perhaps those other folks know it would be a waste of money to advertise in our club magazine considering the low probability of any sales. :stick

I'd be happier to see advertising from full-size truck manufacturers, and maybe the occasional BMW car ad, since most of us have one of these.

Hey, I'm against letting non-BMW motorcycles come to our rallies.
Don't get me started.

Yeah, my whole home including garage once upon a time and hopefully once again, diesel prices be damned.

I don't see any problem since the ON has become much more of a general interest motorcycle travel magazine. If you remove the ads and the letters complimenting particular dealers for great service, most of the rest of the magazine is generic and any brand could be substituted.
Despite the magazine getting far thicker and slicker, I have been disappointed with the direction the ON has taken in the last few years. I got much more information about BMW from the uglier and thinner ON of several years ago.

that would be nice, but the ON's reach is too inefficient, especially considering that most of us also subscribe to the general cycle books with larger circulations.
i wouldn't mind seeing some lifestyle product advertising, such as absolut vodka ads... :ha

I think another good idea for the ON would be scratch and sniff ads. All of the advertisements for the R bikes could include a little burning smell in the final drive area, and the ads for the K1200LT's would smell like horse liniment.
Is anyone writing these down?
Who's the MOA secretary anyway?

Dear Breadman,
For once you make perfect sense in questioning the need of Canadians to attend rallies. Most of the year we are too busy digging ourselves from the snow, and when spring comes (usually around mid July) it is too late to attend any rallies as we must start preparations for the coming winter. :violin
Besides, who would want a bunch of BMW riders, beer drinking, happy going Canadians at a rally? That would spoil the somber mood for sure... Then again there is the question of letting us come in the US. That could raise the alert level to Orange or purple green (or whatever dangerous color you guys use lol). We would not want that.
All in all a wise decision, come to think of it one should also question the participation of Maine, Vermont, NH, northern NY, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Washington since they share a common border with Canadians. :ca
Also consider Mexico as the same situation as Canada. That would exclude riders from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. :jose
Since Florida is only 50 miles from Cuba they should be excluded too. Since Louisiana has been flooded I would recommend to keep them out also. You never know.:scratch
Now the riders from the Tornado alley usually bring bad weather with them wherever they travel. Out with them too (Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa). :whistle
By the same token and for the same reason, the riders from Hurricane alley also tend to bring their weather with them. I say exclude them too. (North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia.) It would make it safer for those who camp out. :wow
Now when one thinks about it, the states of Rhode Island, Mass, Conn, Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland all boast their academic potential and proclaim to be IVY league... How's that for the wrong crowd at motorcycle rallies? We wouldn't want them to take over the beer tent and convert it into a wine and cheese affair (God forbid). No sir I say they are the wrong crowd and should not be allowed at rallies. :bottle
Now that leaves the troublesome question of Nevada and Utah. One is covered with salt lakes (bad for camping) and the other with sand and horrible heat. Who needs them? :sick
Illinois is home of the Ironbutt Association and are thus alway busy planning insane 100,000 miles rides. They probably would not be able to attend anyway.
So the rally participants should ONLY come from Tennessee, West Virginia, South Dakota and DC. Come to think about it South Dakotans should not be allowed out of their state (without a trailer) so that leaves them out too.:bolt
Then after consideration, people from DC are only trouble makers, kick them out.:banghead
That is it. The rally should only be opened to riders from Tennessee and West Virginia. All 12 of them. :brad
cheers
Denis :bottle

Wyoming now shares a border with Canada? Them Canadians are taking over as we speak, we'd better do something to keep 'em out! :)
When something like this comes up, we need someone to channel the essence of the late Robert Hellman! :thumb

Ok it was late and I was running out of excuses. Go ahead and include them for rally participants, that should raise the total from 12 to 18 lol. :dance

I think that Moto Guzzi advertised in the MOA years ago. If I remember right BMWNA didn't bring their bikes to one of the nationals, but Moto Guzzi was nice enough to bring a fleet of their bikes for rally goers to test ride.

Hmm...I'd be interested to see some data on this. I doubt a majority ( "most" ) of BMW riders own a BMW 4-wheeled vehicle. My totally random impression is that quite few of us drive a BMW car. Full size truck, eh, maybe, but no more representation than the average among the populace, I'd think.
No BMW here with more than 2 wheels, and no full size truck either in this driveway.
Might be an interesting poll: how many BMW riders are BMW drivers currently...
