Farfus fastest BMW driver in Mexican WTCC qualifying.
04-05-2008 Press Release
Puebla, 5th April 2008. Augusto Farfus (BR) of BMW Team Germany secured sixth place on the grid for the third round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship. At the “Autódromo Miguel E. Abed” in Puebla-Amozoc (MX), the 24-year-old recorded the sixth-fastest time in the dying seconds of the qualifying session, setting a time of 1:41.583 minutes. Due to a penalty for Chevrolet’s Robert Huff (GB), he gained another grid position. Farfus was the only BMW national team driver who succeeded in making it into the top-ten. SEAT driver Jordi Gené (ES) clocked a 1:40.808-minute lap and claimed pole position for the first of Sunday’s two sprint races.

“As we expected, it was a truly difficult qualifying,” said Farfus after the session. “But I’m more than happy with sixth place. We knew that it would be very difficult to fight against the front-wheel drive cars. A big thank you goes to my team. Following the practice sessions, everyone worked extremely hard, and we managed to find the best compromise in terms of set-up.”

Félix Porteiro (ES) of BMW Team Italy-Spain led the way for the remaining quartet of BMW national team drivers by finishing 11th. BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB) and Farfus’s team-mate Jörg Müller (DE) followed in 12th and 13th respectively. Alessandro Zanardi (IT) came 15th for BMW Team Italy-Spain. Following an accident in the first free practice session, the 41-year-old had to sit out the second practice in the morning. However, his team repaired his BMW 320si WTCC in time for qualifying.

Nine minutes before the end, the session was red-flagged. Tiago Monteiro (PT) was stranded in the gravel due to a technical problem on his SEAT. Should Monteiro’s car have an engine change, Porteiro, Priaulx, Müller and Zanardi will all gain one place on the starting grid.

Porteiro said: “A few things combine on this circuit: the height of the place, the low grip level and our rear-wheel drive. Consequently, there’s a big gap between us and the top. That’s why you cannot praise Augusto’s performance enough. On almost every other track, this would have earned him pole position. For my first race in Puebla I have clearly set my sight on P8 to have an excellent starting position for race two.”

“This circuit is absolutely unforgiving,” added Priaulx, who is ranked third in the current WTCC drivers’ standings. “You only need to be a little too quick when entering the turns, and you will get punished straight away. On my last run I lost the rear in turn 7. That’s a pity because the performance of the car was good and I could have ended up better. You can see that all cars carrying ballast lie close to each other. Handicap weight has an extreme effect here in Puebla.”

The third round of the World Touring Car Championship will start at 12:20hrs local time on Sunday (18.20hrs BST). Race two will get underway at 15:20hrs (21:20hrs BST). The drivers will have two 16 lap races ahead of them.

Priaulx scores sole point for BMW in difficult Mexican WTCC races.
04-06-2008 Press Release
Puebla, 6th April 2008. In two difficult FIA World Touring Car Championship rounds in Puebla (MX), the BMW national team drivers had to make do with scoring just one point. It was BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB), who managed to walk away from Mexico with a point in the bag by finishing eighth in the afternoon race at the “Autódromo Miguel E. Abed“. SEAT’s Jordi Gené (ES) and Tiago Monteiro (PT) secured the race wins at the 3.240-kilometre track.

Thus Mexico remains an unloved territory for BMW. In the six WTCC rounds held to date in Puebla, the manufacturer has only managed to celebrate one podium finish, back in 2005. In the Drivers’ Championship, Priaulx remains the best-placed BMW driver, having 14 points under his belt. The reigning champion ranks fifth, 12 points behind new championship leader Rickard Rydell (SE/SEAT). In the Manufacturers’ Championship, BMW holds second place behind SEAT, with a points’ tally of 40.

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“I’m glad I tried out ice racing a couple of weeks ago as the track was as slippery as ever today. Off the racing line you were simply left without a chance. The point I scored in race two was definitely the best ever, if you take the SEAT dominance into consideration.”

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“After a spin, which was caused by a collision at the start of race one, I had to start from zero again, and I was forced to fight with blunt weapons: The steering was damaged, and it was far from easy to gain some ground again. At the end of the day, I finished 14th. However, from this position I couldn’t challenge for the top positions in race two. Puebla still doesn’t work well for us.”

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“Despite my relatively good grid position for race one, today’s rounds were as tough for us as we had expected them to be. The beginning of the end was lap one in the first race, when I was hit hard by a SEAT driver. This cost me the chance to make it into the top eight. A lot of work waits for us between now and the next event.”

Félix Porteiro (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“In comparison to my fellow BMW drivers I’m quite happy with my performance. In qualifying I was the second-fastest BMW. However, the gap to the top is obviously far too big. I’m happy that these two races lie behind us and I can hardly wait to go to Valencia for my home races.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“I’m very disappointed about the first race. At the start I tried to keep out of all the trouble – but then another driver decided to drag me directly into it by hitting me. The second race went quite smoothly, although I would have wished for a little bit more performance. Sometimes it goes well for you, sometimes against you. But I think that recently I have been unlucky too often.”

Husqvarna News Letter

HUSQVARNA BACK TO VICTORY IN MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

April 6th 2008, a date that enters in Husqvarna history with the conquest of the first MX3 World Championship GP held in Talavera de La Reina, Spain. The young riders of SIMA Husqvarna Team brought the Italian brand back to the podium after 6 years from the very last victory in the Motocross World Championship performed by Alex Puzar who, in 2002, won the Bulgarian GP in the 125 class.
On his TC 450, Thomas Allier surprised his rivals, proving that being young does not always mean being inexperienced. At his very first race in the MX3 World Championship, Allier got the third place in race 1, after falling at 3 laps to the end while leading the heat.
Allier just wanted more and in heat 2 left no hopes to his rivals and leaded the race until the very end. The French rider celebrated the victory with SIMA team and special guests Walter Scaltritti from Husqvarna Racing Dept. and Martino Bianchi PR and Racing Activities Coordinator, as well as with team-mate Christophe Martin, 4th overall.
Thomas declared at the end of the race "This is all new to me, the team, the bike, but I feel supported both by SIMA and Husqvarna and this just makes me want to give all I can. This is just the beginning, the best is yet to come."

MEO GETS REVENGE IN SPAIN

The third round of WEC took place in Sitges, Spain. After a disappointing week end in Portugal where Meo didn’t shine as used to, Antoine arrived in Spain with the thirst for victory. On Saturday, in the E2 class, Antoine rode like hell his TE 450, arriving at the end of the day on second place, a result that gave him just what he needed to start Sunday’s race with enthusiasm.
On Sunday the French rider had a slow start right in the first special test. Ex MX rider didn’t give up and in the second special test Antoine was third already, position that he managed to hold until the end. Harder Sunday for the other CH Racing Husqvarna Team’s riders: in the E3, after getting third place on Saturday, Sebastien Guillaume was only 5th at the chequered flag. Young rider Marc Bourgeois in E Junior was third on Saturday and 4th on Sunday’s race.
Missing from the E1 scenes, rider Bartosz Oblucki got back to his home in Poland to recover from the hand injury.
Next WEC GP will be held right in Bart’s home Country on June 14th and 15th.

GREAT DEBUT FOR CF RACING TEAM IN THE ITALIAN MOTORALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

Great debut for CF Racing Husqvarna team at the first Italian Motorally championship race held near Potenza. Even if the rain and the mud created lots of problems to the riders, Andrea Mancini got first and second places in the week end, getting the second place overall in the 450 4 stroke class. Awesome results also for Mancini's team-mates: Angelo Maggi was third overall in the 500 class, while Paolo Pettinari was first at the finish line in the 250 4 stroke class. Last, but not least, in the Marathon class Andrea Cuminetti conquered the podium on his TE 610.
Not only the CF Racing team hit the jackpot at the beginning of 2008 racing season, but showed the performance of their new TE with injection system which, even in the mud, contributed to the team's victory.

The Isle of Man coroner has criticised safety measures at last year's TT races following the deaths of a rider and two spectators.

More than 200 people have been killed on the course since the first tourist trophy race in 1907.

Today's Bike Candy is way cool. Can you or someone tell us anything about "what" it is? Whose tank design? Is the photo from BMW archives or elsewhere?

thanks

The bike was apparently built by Racecar Motos (http://www.recarmotos.com.br/default.asp), a Brazilian shop. Dig into their site and you will find more pictures of this beautiful machine.

I sourced the picture from Otto Nero ( http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A//ottonero.blogspot.com/2008/02/brazil.html&hl=en&langpair=it|en&tbb=1&ie=utf-8) (note- scroll down it is the second bike) as part of a search for BMW café type and variant bikes. I have daydreams of building an ‘endurance café’ airhead.

The bike listings in the New Blogs listed in the Departments section have a ton of café bike pictures pictures
