OK, I am looking to install an aftermarket exhaust system like Remus or ZTechnic. I am interested in the reduced weight, and efficiency, but not at the expense of my ear drums. Can I get some feedback from folks that have made the investment? Wanting not to wear ear plugs!

I have a Laser Hot Cam slip on that I am very happy with. It is not too loud by any means and definitely gives the bike a better sound without being too obnoxious. It also removes the high powered sewing machine sound. The only downside is you can smell the unburned exhaust fumes now because of the removal of the cat when you are sitting idling (minor complaint).
Check out this site to see what it looks like on the bike.

I have the Staintune on my bike. I like the sound, you can ride w/o the baffle insert. I ride with the baffle. It needs polishing once to twice a yr. With the Ztech you have to repack once a yr.
I wear earplugs all the time even when I had the original exhaust on the K12RS. My hearing is very precious to me. They also make a big difference when you are on the road reducing noise fatigue.

Like you, I wanted to get a lighter exhaust system. I purchased a staintune system and am very, very happy with it. With or without the baffle, which by the way never ever needs repacking, the bike sounds fantastic!!!!! I have a 2000 K12RS and it diffently makes a difference. The bike actually seems better balanced not that it wasn't before. I absolutely love my ride. I bought the staintune system second hand for 1/2 the cost of it new which was about $750.00. It would still be worth it at the full price. One thing you will have to do if you do put a new exhaust system on it will be to recalibrate the computer. Easily done......
1. turn your ignition key on - first click
2. slowly open and shut you throttle 3 times
3.turn your key off
Done!
If you don't do this the engine has a tendency to backfire sometimes especially in hot weather, when you get off the throttle or when you are down shifting. Hope this helps. You will have to do this if you put any after market system. Good Luck.:type
