So I get home from the shop the other day and i'm looking through the mail and there IT is. A letter from the AARP with my temporary card in it.

:scratch How did this happen? I once thought I would never live to 30! Gloria Steinem, when told she didn't look like she was 40 responded, "This is what 40 looks like". I don't feel like 50 but I guess this is what 50 feels like(actually gotta couple of months to go but the AARP folks start early so ya don't forget).

Of course the wife and kids are having a field day with this. I will just have to comfort myself with the knowledge that people say 50 is the new 30 (whatever that means, sounds like rationalization to me).

Think I'll go out on the proch and rock a bit now.....

ps: I joined, gotta love those senior discounts!

I also joined AARP when I turned 50. Be prepared to be deluged with offers to sell you everything nder the sun. AARP was started and is a marketing and lobbying outfit.

I dropped them after a few years because I didn't agree with their political positions on most things. They want everything now for the older generation regardless of how it is going to impact our children and grandchildren in the future. I also found I could do better than most of their deals as they apparently gt a cut of everything with their name on it.

AARP has some cool articles once awhile, but I also know that anyone who lets me be a member without asking questions are representing a club I most likely don't want to be a member!

Their "specials" and other promo stuff I can give or take. It's an age thing I guess...

AARP basically doesn't like bikes, beer, guns and girls.

What they really like is having an avaricious bunch of geezers vulnerable to their scare-tactic marketing blitzes. They were formed by an insurance company--does that give you an clue--and headed for years by FDR's free loading son. Who by the way, out of the goodness of his heart and love of the "greatest generation" accepted a token salary of a mere 500K per year.

If they had their way, they would close the schools and use the money for senior cruises.

Never was, and never will be a member

I am now 57, and refuse to join due to their political positions. Can get same discounts on travel, etc. thru AAA or one of my credit cards.

And the United States was founded by a bunch of scofflaw malcontents who refused to pay taxes. You still hold that against it?

It's been a long time since anybody called me "avaricious" :thumb but some other ignoramus once tried to include me as a 'scared old geezer'. I daresay I'm younger than you and if you seriously think I'm either vulnerable or scared by anything AARP posits, you can suck my exhaust. Otherwise, you might want to check out the AARP/Hartford auto insurance rate that beat out Progressive for me!

I have already had my experience with AARP/Hartford Insurance. I had them for two years until they "adjusted" my premiums. We have two vehicles we normally drive plus a pickup truck to tow my camper with. With my 2nd. renewal notice, the premium was up $150 on my truck and up slightly on the car I normally drive. I called and asked why the large jump in my truck premium as it is seldom driven. I was told it was not eligible for discounts because it was not my main vehicle and I might loan it out. I then asked why the premium was up on my other car and was told it was because it was driven more. I asked why I was charged more on one because I didn't drive it and more on the other because I did. They couldn't explain it to me but said I should stay with them because of my age. This was clearly an attempt to scare me into staying with them for fear of not being able to get other insurance. They then looked at my age and saw I was still under 60 and they said "Oh".

I can only imagine what they are doing to their older and/or more uninformed people. I consider AARP to be a predator who takes advantage of older people.

I went insurance shopping and of the three lower quotes I got, I chose the one that saved me $400+ per year from my AARP rates.

I am 30! Does this mean that I'm living the "new 10?" :brad And if 50 is the new 30, please dont try to dress like you're 30. This goes double for women! :bolt

My kids tell me I still dress like I'm 12 (or like I did when I was 12).
