I just bought a 1996 R1100RT and it appears that there is not enough room to be comfortable or to be able to see well enough for my wife as passenger. I am 6'4" and my wife is not a small person. I am wondering if a back rest other than the rear trunk/back rest would give us more room.
Does anyone have experience with such a back rest? My front seat, by the way, is set in the middle.
Thanks,
Steve

I have had a backrest on my 99 r1100rs for many years and prefer it to a trunk. I use a t-bag when I need more luggage space.

I don't know. I have a 96 RT as well with the 33L trunk and backrest. From what I have seen of the backrests available, the pad is about in the same place. If you could find an adjustable one so she could sit furhter back and still make contact with the backrest and seat it might work.
Then again, maybe you should try my solution. I have a 96 RT for single use and in-city rides. I have an '06 LT for two-up riding. My wife loves the LT. When I went looking for a new one, after she sat on the LT it was over. But I also told here the LT wouldn't work as a daily ride and I'd haave to buy two bikes. I thought she'd compromise on the new RT, but instead she said OK. So I bought two used motorcycles instead and I'm much happier that way.

when I ride the RT it is most often by myself. my wife just doesn't care for it. I put a pad on the 33L trunk. she still won't ride. if I take the Electra Glide, she is ready to go. her main complaint is she says she gets more wind on the BMW. Daaaah its a motorcycle not a car!!!!!!!
