I'm planning an extended trip thru Central and South America, departure Nov 1, 2008 and am looking to increase my range with a larger gas tank for my 1987 K75c. Can anyone recommend a tank that is larger than the 5 gallon stock?
Thanks in advance,
Peter B

Peter - over on AdventureRider (advrider.com) - under the RoadWarriers section, there is a chap who has documented making several tanks for K75's..
I suspect $$$ will be rather high - it's all hand/custom work, lots of really careful prep and assembly is needed. If you're willing to consider other ways to carry extra fuel - there are fuel cells available that can be plumbed into the K75 fuel system. Probably find links for them at the IronButt Association website.

The late Ray Randolph modified a stock K tank to hold 8 gallons...finding that in reasonable condition probably will be $700.
Another option is to carry plastic 1 gallon bidons...sitting on your passenger foot peg and strapped to you saddlebag.
This will work on or off road pretty well. Try this riding around town with filled with water(which is actually heavier than gas) to get a feel BEFORE investing in fuel cell options. Once you've ridden about 100 miles, empty the fuel from the plastic bidons/jugs into your stock tank, and you're fine.

Custom “Ray Randolph” 8.7 gallon Gas Tank. Ray Randolph built all aluminum custom expanded K-Bike tanks that gives your K bike a 280-320 mile range. Perfect for long distance RT or side car rig. Rear mount will work with either single or two bolt designs. Sound “no damage” condition. Currently black, but needs refinishing. Includes a custom tank cover.

Note I just discovered tank corrosion in my '87 tank under the low spot located under the fuel pump. You'll have to drain the tank and pull the pump to inspect it.

The dreaded water globule. If you will park, using the sidestand, on a sloped driveway, the water globule will be easy to see without either draining the tank of removing the pump. Then you can suck it out with a clear vinyl tube or a squeezy bulb.
Or alcohol.

Peter,
You've really extended your trip as you're 4.5 months past departure date!
I had the tank on my former K100RS modified at a local fabricator. It was about 8 years ago and ran $450 for the metal work alone, add a couple hundred for body & paint. If you can give up rear rack space a plastic fuel cell 3-5 gallons will do the job much cheaper, and will work via gravity feed. Should be under $200.

I've been looking to get a set of these:

but i'm not certain that they will fit. I may also just remove the rubber from the rear pegs and weld a shelf to it to create space to secure some gas cans.

Those Peg Packers are pretty cool, Todd, but I suppose I would home-brew some K75 mounts if I had welding gear & skills.
I like the ammo-box add-ons, good for tools and extra bits and the RAM mount idea/possibilities. Hook up a camera/video with a remote control wired to the handlebars...:eat
I'm sure you will post follow-ups with photos if you do, eh?

Sorry for the 1.5yr lapse. Yes they are hideously ugly but I plan on painting them and trimming the metal (once I get a plasma cutter) and most importantly they work and ended up only costing ~$20 in materials and a couple hours of my time. I have a second one on the other side that I plan to use for gasoline.

ps: I am awful at welding.

Nice work...looks like you used a similar weld point to mine...

This can hold about 2.5 gallons per side...depending on the bottle shape.

Very nice, and much more substantial that my mounts!
Linda Tanner makes custom auxiliary fuel cells for K Bikes, the IB crowd seems to approve of her work. I have had her repair a Multivario for me, the work was excellent, turnaround quick, and the price more than fair.
Her website is: http://www.customtankbags.com/
As you can see, she also makes awesome custom tankbags.

Todd---no problem on the 1.5 year lapse---look how long it's taking me just to replace my brake lines and finish my renovation!:D
I think your mounts will be fine after a bit of paint and rounding off of the sharp edges.
Maybe some sort of thick rubber or plastic moulding would be an alternative to further metalwork.
Perhaps you could add these mounts to your Lamp One Design lineup? Others (especially Iron Butt riders) might want to buy some for some long rides.

I've been thinking about it. Along with my Hella 500 mounts. Oh and I'm also working on a skid plate, haha. :dance
I like trying to sell parts that no one wants :violin

Todd,
If you want...I can mail you these brackets to refab and resell to the K community. I bet you can weld a nice set to stick a fuel cell on either side that can pump into the main tank when necessary.
Let me know...I have no commercial interest, but if you do...its yours.
