My 1988 R100RS has the cast aluminum top rack attached to the seat. My wife would like something to lean backwards against, and I have been unsuccessful in finding a Baron von Zipper sissy bar in the BMW OEM catalog. I have considered luggage, but am first deferring to the membership.
Is there anyone who has come up with a way to accomodate a passenger who wants back support on this ride?

Corbin seems to be the only way to go if you want something new. If you have a lot of time and patience you can always place a "want ad".

Had the same problem with my R80RT and had to settle with Corbin.

Good luck.

I believe that you have one of 3 choices before you go to the luggage:
1. Corbin seat - easy to do, as all you have to do is swap seats (I went that route)

2. Reynolds rack - you have to find it on ebay, craiglist, moa flea market - the question is do you already have a rack? I have seen monolever bikes with older set of reynolds back rest... so it has been done before and will work... other members can report on that

3. Build something yourself - allow your creativity to flow, it will be a custom build to fit your wife and you can go a corbin route (into the seat), a reynolds way (into the rack, or you can come up with your way maybe a la oilhead/hexhead backrest.

Good luck, let us know what you come up with...:thumb

I also have the same desire, with an 85 R80RT, and I have a perfect older style Reynolds backrest. I would be interested in how past riders have made the mod. to put them together. I'm assuming the RT and later RS share the same seat cowling. Made of fiberglass I wonder if it can handle a direct bolt on similar to the metal cowl of my old RS. Thanks for the thread.

you forgot option 4: Wifely takes an MSF rider Ed class, and you (plural) purchase a a bike for her. no backrest concerns whatsoever!
