My heated grips were causing a short and blowing a fuse. I found the short and it was not an easy repair, the wire on heated tape itself was damaged. I had the ATV style wrapped under the handgrips. So I'm looking to get heated grips again and looking at the ATV style like this: http://www.canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/heated-grips-alt.php and I'm looking at this: http://www.hotgrips.com/store.php?crn=203.
I could spend countless hours looking all over the net for something, but I'm sure a few people here have had good or bad luck on some products. So I'm looking for some suggestions.
Thanks,
-steve

You don't mention what type of bike you have, but why not retrofit BMW heated grips to your bike if at all possible? My experience with BMW OEM heated grips is that they are bullet-proof and obviously designed to work with your bike's electrical system.
Might be worth looking into...

I use aftermarket grips and like them just fine. A fraction of the price of the OE systems and heat is heat.

Not if they short out, stop working, and require replacement. Where's the value there? :)

Get some heated gloves. What good are heated grips after you put on insulated gloves?

I find heated grips are only so good. I also have heated gloves and they work great in the worst weather.

I used the Dual Star system, hard to see how they would short out if they were properly installed and wired up. Electrical circuitry and wiring diagrams have always been a blind spot for me, their instructions were easy to follow and mine work flawlessly.:stick

Another vote for the Dual Star here. I had a 95 K75 with BMW heated grips and now on my 90 K75RT I have Dual Stars. More heat in my opinion and simple clear to install.

I knew the answer was out there. Thanks:clap
I'll order the dual star today.
another question: My current set up had a rocker switch that was either "on" or "off". It looks like the dual star has either HI or LOW settings. Where would I purchase a switch that will fit into the current dash where there will be the three settings OFF, LOW, HI? I don't think I want to use the switch that is provided.
Thanks again.

You can get the standard BMW Heated grip switch that was a three position rocker switch. It works for Hi / Lo and off. Had one like that as standard equipment on my 95K75. I used the one that Dual Star provided and seems to work well.

Do you have a place I would order the bmw switch from?
yeah I thought switch that was sent would work. I was more thinking about the asthetics.

Lots of choices for online BMW motorcycle parts - only a few listed here:
Max BMW Motorcycles (http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/)
Bob's BMW Motorcycles (http://www.bobsbmw.com/)
Sierra BMW motorcycles (http://www.sierrabmwonline.com/)
A&S BMW motorcycles (http://www.ascycles.com/)

A & S wanted $30 just for the switch. Not sure I want to spend that much. I'll keep looking.

Taking this in a slightly different direction:
We have a k75rt (1991) with what the folks at K11OG have identified as K100 heated handgrips/bar ends (the K75s do not have bar ends).
The right grip (throttle) has broken wires. Before ordering the replacement grip and leads, I'm wondering if there is any info on repairing the leads for heated grips--I suspect that such repairs would be common to all series of BMW bikes.
IBMWR didn't have any information; this is the only thread that came up here. I've also asked this question on K11OG.
Thanks in advance.

Larry, I have a 1986 K100RT I had to repair both sides of the heated grips. The right side had a broken wire right at the end of the grip and the left side ended up having a broken wire down by the side of the engine. It required chasing the wires and using a continuity tester. The repair on the right side worked quite well, if you are interested in a little more detail let me know.
