I’m planning on attaching a Vesco Rapid Transit fairing to my 1976 R90/6, but before I do, I want to make sure the wiring hookup is determined before I prep and paint the fairing. As an aside I’ll be attaching a set of Wixom saddlebags as soon as I get the fairing hookup figured out.

Here is the fairing without lowers and with the windscreen removed the R90/6 is in the background.

And here is the area and wires behind the headlight on the fairing.

Before I start cutting wires inside the headlight shell I’m hoping I can get some constructive and timesaving input from the group on the forum.

I’ve determined which wires control the left and right turn signals and the high and low beam headlight inside the fairing. What I haven’t figured out is the ground from the fairing to the bike. Thanks for any and all help!

I am not sure, but I don't believe you have to cut any wires. On my windjammer, there was a female plug on the fairing, and I had a harness with a male plug coming out of the headlight shell that plugged right into the female socket on the fairing. You can get them at Auto parts stors if yours isn't that way. It is really easy to disconnect the fairing that way. The harness plugged onto the extra lugs on the board inside the headlight shell, I didn't have to disconnect anything and it was easy to convert back to no fairing. Good luck.

Thanks Roy. The tail end of the Vesco "Pig Tail" is bare wire, so I need to splice in somewhere, I've tried hooking up the black and white wires from the fairings right turn signals to the black and white wires from the right turn signal on the bike and nothing lights up on the fairing.

I may have to bring in a local BMW buddy to help me muddle through this. Thanks again!

NP, sorry I couldn't be more help. Can you just crimp the female ends on the end of the harness, and slide them on the tabs in your headlight shell? I just had a windjammer, and there was an umbilical that wired right onto the extra lugs on the board. The original connector I either removed, or just tucked it back into the headlight shell. The umbilical came out of one of the rubber grommeted holes in the shell and it had what looked like a plastic automotive type connector that plugged right into a matching one on the windjammer.
When I removed the windjammer, I just had to remove that extra umbilical from the lugs on the board inside the headlight shell and snap my headlight into the original connector. I think I left the wires for the turn signals inside also, but disconnected. Everything is color coded, and you should have a continuity tester or Volt/ohmmeter, it helps.
If you are not electrically inclined, it does help to have someone who is. If you are not sure, you can meter out the existing wires, everything runs to the headlight shell IIRC. Good luck.

The headlight wires from the fairing can have "spades" attached then I can slide them into the headlamp plug on the bike, I hope to have that done tomorrow evening.

The turn signal wires on the bike need to be cut so I can take the front turn signals off of the bike. Then I need to solder the fairing turn signal wires into the bike wiring. I'm not able to get the turn signals on the fairing to work while attached to the bike wiring, even though all the fairing lights work when hooked up to a 12 volt source.

I'll get my meter out and start checking continuity and volts.

Thanks again Roy!

When I installed the same fairing on my 1982 R65 I made a harness that had spade connectors that matched the connectors on the bike so I could go bake to a stock bikes.

NP, take care of that beautiful machine.:thumb
Can you disconnect the turn signal wires inside the headlight shell and remove them in case you want to go back? Just a thought.
I hate cutting wires, it's personal problem. :laugh

Thanks for the advice all!

Roy, fret not!!! No wires were cut in the addition of the fairing. I've attached spades and plugs where wires were once soldered and then covered those connections with heat shrink tubing.

Once I pluged in the headlight connections, the turn signals worked fine on the fairing. My problem was trying to make the turn signals work without having a proper ground. I can re-attach and hook up the original turn signals anytime with the full length of un-cut wires. And, I have a proper headlight shell cover to keep all those 'lectronics clean and dry.

Again, thanks for the help.

Now that’s even funnier than my wiring skills!
