Well, here in New England the sand is almost off the roads and I am ready to ride.
I love my '96 K1100LT, but, in a few months when the temp starts to climb, I am not looking forward to "cooking" on my hot summer rides.
I installed "Air Wings" last year and I get little relief.
I am hoping someone has come up with a "cooler" solution. :idea

The LT was perhaps the worst offender in this department. But my 85 RS is hot as well..... here's what I've done.

1. Found a pair of K Guards. Out of production, but these sometimes show up on IBMWR's and BMW MOA's flea markets.

2. Insulated the two fuel lines with inexpensive pipe insulation. Both the fuel and the return are exposed to quite a bit of heat, which in turn heats up the gas in the tank and the tank itself.

3. Checked the alignment of both knee guards and replaced the rubber bits.

4. Took some standard household fiberglass insulation, with the foil backing and placed it inside the lower fairing to make sure the heat is diverted out the vents, not onto my feet. Stuffed a bit more where the heat was coming out and scorching my thigh.

5. Bought a pair of BMW Summer pants, well vented, they seem to help as well.

The IBMWR website has lots of further discussion and ideas on this 'hot' topic.:type

I put an aux switch on the fan. It runs at about half speed and keeps the air moving through the fairing and lowers. I turn it on in traffic and then off when I am at speed.

Helps a lot

I bough my '86 K75S under a year ago and always wondered why someone put a switch on the "dash" to turn the fan on when the fan turn on just fine on it's own. I will have to try it out the next time my legs get hot from the engine.
thanks

Trade it for a CL or CLC, the bike BMW designed to replace the K1100LT. It does everything better than the LT except it lacks the K engine qualities. Would your bike be red by chance?

Your bike is ideal for Fall Winter and Spring.

For summer, an airhead is just the ticket!

If unused for long periods of time, K fans get dirty. When current's finally applied to them, the shaft sometimes can't turn. If the shaft can't turn, the brushes heat up from the current flow, and being plastic, eventually melt. Unless you're really handy, this means replacing the fan.

K75 bikes have a (relatively) big radiator for their heat production; if you're moving, and the weather's not hot, the fan may never come on. Thus, some folks install switches to manually turn the fan on from time to time, so its bearings stay free.

I had a '84 K11RS, http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q13/bikerfish1100/Joe1.jpg and after getting a blistered inner thigh one July afternoon, I made this upgrade for summer cooling.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q13/bikerfish1100/ducatchurch1-1.jpg yes, very cool. but still not quite what I was looking for.
subsequently, I made this permanent upgrade.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q13/bikerfish1100/mtmeeker2.jpg the combination of oilhead power/handling/comfort and mountain twisties relieved my heat concerns for all but the most horrible days (i.e., those rare times when i must return to the humidity & heat of the Northeast).
