View Full Version : What should I do?

I just learned the 24K service my previous owner had done before I bought it did not include the coolant, brake, and clutch flush! For $800+ they did the fuel filter, air filter, and valve adjust, not even oils!
So, it sounds like I need to take everything apart again and do those items. While I'm in there, what else should I do?

Complain? On my 85 K, these items would be only a couple of hours work... I think harder on your bike. I somehow recall that the ABS brake flush is a dealer thing....?
I don't think that ignoring them is the answer.

Oils and coolant are easy enough, but Beemer01 is right, you'll have to take it to a dealer for the brakes on an '02. Had you bought an '01 or older, you could do that yourself as well.
It's not just BMW, my riding buddy's Honda with integrated brakes needs dealer attention as well. Although I'm not sure why these items were not taken care of, unless the previous owner stated he could do them himself to keep the bill at the dealership down, but didn't get it done prior to the sale.

I don't think the prior posts quite get it. Off course it's not a big deal to change out the fluids, but shouldn't it have been included in a $800 service? Sounds like the previous owner got ripped off. If a 24k service was paid for and the shop didnt' address all of the specified items then they should complete it properly or refund some jack.

I'd have to disagree with you on this. I did my own brake fluid on my Goldwing with integrated brakes. As I see it, the only thing I would need the dealer for is to hook it up to his test computer which is not required except to diagnose a problem.

It's a K bike, keep the oil changed, brakes and tires in good condition. Then when the next 24K comes up have the dealer give you an estimate of what it will cost for the service plus other incidentals like tires and shocks. You may want to consider trading it at that time.

No, that won't work for me! I'm going to do the work, my only question is what else should I do while I'm in there! I won't pay the dealer to do that stuff, it's half the fun of having a bike and if I had to pay that much for maintenance, I couldn't afford to ride!

Talked to my buddy, you are right.....he was having a problem with both tires locking up in cold weather, in fact, while on the way to the dealer, it was warmer, so rather than trailer it, he rode, and they locked up and he dropped it, ruining the plastics on one side. I must have been thinking about my other friends '02 K1200RS, which has integrated/servo assist. We were working on both bikes brakes last fall and I obviously mixed them up. Only 41 and already my memory stinks! My '00 K1200RS has neither linked, nor servo assist and they work just fine and are easy to work on. Not to mention, I can do burn outs........... not that I would, I'm 41 after all, not some kid................:p

If you look at the service schedule and instructions, the coolant/brake/clutch fluid change is not part of the 24K service. The fluid change is part of the annual requirements as they are based on a calendar schedule, not a mileage requirement. They usually are done during a 12/24/36/etc maintenance check because the bike is already opened up for the check but they are not required. There are two cycles for maintenance, mileage AND calendar.
