I picked up a R65 this past september and it is a blast to ride and only has 17K on it, but is it normal for it to only put out 12v @ idle and almost 13v @ 3000rpms.:scratch

What is the Gen light doing. On all my bikes the Gen light goes out around 1500 RPMs. Idle voltage could be aroung battery voltage. At higher RPMs will be above 13 almost 14 volts.

12v at idle is pretty good. Most airheads have the charging light on until you pass 1500 or so rpm, and don't start charging until over 3k or so.

thats exactly how she is GEN light goes out at 1500 or after riden and warm and does a good job at charging @3k. sounds like she's normal then. I did do the AC volt meter test that was in the moa mag and the diode board is good so thanks:thumb

Where are you measuring the 13v? What's the reading at 4K RPM? If that's at the battery terminals, that's a bit low. It'll charge, but it will take many miles just to recover what you took out for each start. If you do stop and go driving, it won't get fully charged at all. You'll need to put a battery tender on it to keep it up. Or maybe you'll need to find out where you're loosing your juice...

i don't know what it is at 4k rpm i was checking it regularly becuase of the gen light and putting on a tender if i did alot of stop and go but it has never failed except once when i let it set untendered for 6 weeks in bitter cold. my average is nothing less then 30miles and even when i have done alot of st/st it would go to foll charge on a tender in an hour or less. some one did say to clean the brushes but i have never done it and just bought a manual. ps @ the battery

Be sure to jump over and sign up at www.r65.org too, a worldwide group dedicated to the wee Beemer.

There's tons of R65 knowledge among those folks!
