View Full Version : Seal depth help
85 K100 RT
Can anyone tell me the proper depth that the rear main is installed to. I would like to make the tool before I tear the bike apart.
Other seals that will be replaced are.
Alternator drive seal
Tranny input and output.
If you know the depths on these I could get a good start on tools for them also.
TIA

Roy -
I doubt if anyone can tell you this.. the reason being - the seal has changed at least 3 times I know of - and so has the seating depth.
In general - putting the seal flush with the case worked - but what you really have to do in order to determine where the seal is going to be - is measure where the lip is on the old one relative to the front face, then measure the same thing on the new one and calculate. Plus - sometimes it's a good thing to move the depth of the sealing lip just a tiny bit so it's seating on fresh metal (since the old one may have worn a bit of a tiny groove in the back of the clutch-basket hub.)
Sorry I couldn't give a definate answer, but each time I've done it - I ended up taking measurements and calculating it out.
Don,
thanks, was hoping there was a "standard" but should have known better.

The original factory tool installed the main seal flush with the block, but it was later revised. The face of the tool was to be turned on a lathe and a depressed area added so that the outer rim of the seal was actually slightly higher than the block. I don't remember the exact amount, but it was around 1mm. There is a service bulletin that shows how to alter the tool.
