View Full Version : First oil change - odd happening!

Just purchased a 1990 K75. When I opened the oil filter cover, what I estimate to be about 3 quarts of oil flooded out. The rest came out of the drain hole. Oil filter was there. It didn't give me much resistance when unscrewing it .. but still the pouring out of oil seems odd. I went ahead and changed the oil and the filter . . but before I try opening the filter cover again, I thought I'd pose the question of why this might happen. Thanks!

Sounds like you took the oil filter cover off first before draining the oil with the drain plug. Next time drain the oil first. Then when you open the filter cover you will get a much smaller amount of oil coming out.

Look closely and you will discover that the cover over the oil filter is nothing more than an O ring sealed plate in the bottom of the oil pan. The oil filter is physically located inside the oil sump.

Thus - whoosh!

Nothing to worry about but the mess.

Drain oil first. Change filter second. Add new oil third.

I never bothered with the drain oil first part.. I just put a big oil catch pan beneath the engine, and loosened the filter cover screws. Saved almost $1.00 on crush washers that way :-) (Channelling Brian Curry..) :dance

It started out as an RT, and the seller was attempting to make it more like a K75, but fried some wiring in the process. So, a couple of months later, I've finally got it to this point cosmetically. Besides cosmetics, I managed the oil change and a compression test. I was pleasantly suprised at the compression test. It was over 160 psi in all 3 cylinders. It has 20,000 miles on it. I really like the ergonomics. I'm 60 years old and I like sitting up straight. So this bike fits me well.

I put an 8 inch Buell headlamp on it with some aluminum fork ears I painted black. so now I'm searching for a fork mounted windshield that doesn't look corny. Any ideas ???

best,
Elliot

So it's just broke in now. You can change to synthetic oil (or not). Have fun!:clap

Might try here: http://www.parabellum.com

Or here: (but they are currently updating their website) http://www.aeroflowscreens.com

Or even here: http://www.nationalcycle.com

Just a few ideas off the top of my head. We just acquired our first BMW last Fall, so we are newbies also.

Nice looking K75- now you can post some pictures of places it takes you.

Thanks very much. I've been looking for quite some time. I'm taking a chance on a windshield that was made for a Yamaha XJR (I think this sold mostly in Europe). It has an 8 inch headlight similar to the one I put on the K75. I got a lot of assistance from a fellow named Irfan at WildHair Accessories. The fairing I picked was an MBD Excel - it's on it's way from Germany so it might be a few weeks before I manage to post a picture.
