The J&M CB has a three wire plug to connect to a PTT switch. The bike has a BMW PTT switch which has two wires. I know the BMW stuff is made by J&M so it must be compatible. Anyone know how I can make these two items work?

Try contacting Sierria Electronics in Ohio. They sell J&M and also do some manufacturing of other brands to work with motorcycles.
They have good over the phone help.

I am interested in putting the J&M handlebar CB on my 1150 RT but after looking at their website I saw mounting brackets for about every other motorcycle except a BMW. Since you are referring to a PTT switch can I assume you do not have the handlebar mount? If you do can you advise on the mounting hardware? Appreciate any help..;)

I have a j & m cb on my Harley and like it fine. I went to the J&M trailer while in Daytona and handed the man my credit card and requested a unit for my R1100RT. He said no can do. they have a contract with BMW. they build the units for BMW but are not allowed to sell them. something about the electrics being different on BMW's and special noise filters. I guess I'll pay the BMW shop a visit and see how many arms and legs they want for one. sounds like bull**** to me.:violin

:scratch Guess that explains that. My RT is at the dealer now getting tires, I'll talk to them when I pick it up. I'm with you, I'm sure it'll hurt. THANKS:thumb for clearing up the mystery.

My dealer installed mine last week. The biggest difference is all the wiring harnesses made bike specific and the custom mounting. It also comes with intercom wiring and had vox activated intercom. It's pricey. $795 and $189 for the antenna kit. The install looks good and the antenna is on the right side at the back of the shelf area. Everything seems to be working well. The CB has weather channels also. I run a Mix it 2 and have my 276 C and Sirius through it right now, and will add my ipod later. When I get it all done and prettied up I will post pictures.
I have several friends who have them on their HD's and they all work great.

That is pricey! Is that total after installation or just hardware? I'll let you guys know what my dealer says. Thanks.

That's just the hardware. I used to think HD stuff was expensive. It can't hold a candle to Beemer toys.

Same problem here. So, I made my own with materials from Lowe's costing around $5.00. Basically, I have attached aluminumum plates from 2"X1/8" bar stock to both the clutch MC cover and the bottom of the J&M unit. Sandwiched between them is a 1/4" sheet of dense closed cell foam and nylon zip-ties secure the two plates together. It is rock solid and vibration free. I could not be happier with the result. Yes, a thief could cut the zip ties and make off with your CB but it would easier to just steal the bike. The audio from my Garmin Zumo 550 feeds to the J&B. With a little luck, I'll attach a photo.

I used a 1-1/2"X1/4" piece of aluminum bar stock for this application. I had to mount it outboard of my large Givi top case. The antenna mounting bar is secured by the two forward bolts that hold the top case attachment plate. It is very secure and out of the way. As to the radio unit mount, it must be positioned so your left index finger can easily reach the PTT lever. In doing so, there is some obscuring of your view in the left-hand mirror. I have not found this to be much of a problem but a small parabolic stick-on mirror might help.

Was at my dealer yesterday and he quoted me a price of $840.00 for the "BMW" CB. Same unit just has the BMW name on the front. OUCH!! And that did not include anteana, etc. For them to do the install we were talking at least $1200.00! Think I'll go to plan B and maybe attempt it myself.

Thanks, Dr. Paul, for the helpful info and pics, yours looks great. Not sure I am quite that handy though. Where did yours actually connect to the handlebars?

The only good info I got from the dealer was that there is an adapter that allows use of the stock AM-FM anteana that came on the bike.

Dr Paul - No issues with the electronics or the need for a special "filter" as stated above?

We are making a 5000 mile trip out west in May and 2 of my buddies have the J&M and really like it. I was hoping to be able to talk to them on the road.
Thanks guys!!

JayJay,
I purchased my J&B CB through cycleaccessorystore.com for a delivered price of $460.30 sans the unuseable mounting hardware. This included the 2' antenna and all wiring harnesses for solo application, headset with mike and connecting cables. The radio is mounted to the clutch MC cover with 2 small machine screws with nylon bushings used to elevate the bottom plate about 1/2" above it. A noise filter comes attached to the power cable. You do NOT want to use the stock radio antenna for a CB application; it is not made for this and will not transmit properly. Besides, I never liked that antenna on the front of the bike; I took mine off! I like it much better behind me.

Paul,

Thanks, I think I see how you did the install. Did you drill 2 new holes in the clutch, MC cover? I've already checked out cycleaccessorystore.com. Sure is much less expensive. Thanks for your input on the antaena too, I was kinda thinking that was a stretch. I may attempt your method. You've been a big help.

JayYes, there is a rubber membrane between the MC cap and the actual fluid. I drilled two holes into the center of the cavities cast into the underside of the cap (this is clear when looking at the removed cap) and secured the mounting plate with machine screws and Ny-Lock nuts below. 1/2" nylon bushings support the plate above the MC cap. I did tap the MC cap for additional stability. You need to drill holes or notch the bottom plate to permit a screwdriver to reach the forwardmost MC cap attachment screws. There is adequate space between the rubber membrane and the cap for these nuts. I know there is a RAM mount for the BMW MC cap (it may be a total replacement for the cap) but you need to keep the radio unit down low to actuate the PTT lever and I have not seen a suitable RAM attachment for the CB. A matching piece of aluminum stock (but shorter as you want the radio positioned a bit to the right of the MC center) is mounted to the CB unit. The bottom of the CB is already machined to accept the mounting screws. The screw heads for both plates nestle nicely into the foam pad between them. I have several hundred miles now with this radio and am very pleased. The CB audio quality is excellent and the voice prompts from my GPS are very clear.

Paul,

Think I've got it, thanks for the clear instructions. I'll probably be asking you more questions when I get into this if its ok.

JayOne more thing. In addition to the nylon bushings supporting the lower plate, I placed nylon washers between the upper plate and the radio unit to permit enough space for the zip-ties to pass through. This is shown in the last photo posted. The zip-ties appear loose but the whole thing is quite stable. Once I figured out the best position for the PTT trigger in relationship to the left grip, it went pretty smoothly. Let me know if you need help!
