The small peg on my kickstand has broken off. I am planing on welding it back on. I figure I need to take the gas tank off and disconnect the battery. Is there any thing else I need to do before welding on the bike?

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the stand?:scratch

It would eliminate any risk factors and allow you to position the piece for easy access.

I welding a bolt that I shaped to look just like the original tab and welded it with a mig welder all in place with the stand folded out. Has not blown up yet, may want to keep a wet towel around. Note: do not try to harden the weld it will just get brittle and break again.

I've never removed a gas tank unless it was in the way but if you feel more comfortable with it removed do it.

Make sure you disconnect BOTH battery terminals and tape them as an added caution.

Also connect your welding ground as close to the weld as possible less chance for the current to flow anywhere else.

You don't need to disconnect anything, especially way down there at the sidestand! I weld regularly and you can use a shield blanket to protect anything you wish. Carbs are the closet gas and they are close, so shield them, but no tank removal is needed. Your ground will be closeby on the stand also, so the current will follow it and not stray much beyond the arc and ground. Make a really good ground connect by grinding to bare metal on the sidestand for this purpose and no issue will arise. If gas is used, no residue and a very clean weld will result. Flux wire will create a messy surround, but easily cleaned with a wire wheel and some brisk scrubbing with a heavy wire brush. Its a quick weld you are doing here, so long exposure is no issue. I just did my sidestand foot tang recently also, on my R100/7. I actually made a new tang from hardware store steel rod and shaped it my way, around the header pipe and then lowered the stand and welded it into place:). Better than new:) Randy13233:thumb :usa

:thumb everyone has given you good advice. personally I would remove the stand. It only takes a minute. many years ago I blew up my charging system on my bike by working on it in place. first choice for welding would be Tig, if not available use a low hydrogen stick rod. 7018 works well and is very durable. give this info to your welder, he will know what I'm talking about.:thumb
