Anyone know the actual diameter of the oil filter opening on the early K bikes, 85 K100RT and 87 K100RS?
Picked up both bikes last fall, don't have my BMW filter wrench anymore (don't ask) and am going to start using the Napa 1348 oil filter.
Picked up a new BMW oil filter today at my local Canadian dealer, thank you for the $28.59 oil filter BMW NA..... :(
Picked up the FloTool #2 super graphite filter wrench at my local WalMart and it fits both the 1348 and the BMW filter (designed for 2 different filter sizes)
Thought I would ask about the opening size before I drop my oil for spring, if I need to grind down the outside lip of the wrench, I could do so now.
3 7/16ths is the outside lip diameter of the FloTool.
Thanks

I won't be home until about 10 this evening. (working late) If you don't get a response I will measure my oil filter wrench and post the size then.
I have already changed my oil so I will not be able to measure the opening, the best I can do is the measurement of the tool.

Would it be possible to post a picture of the oil filter?
Thanks, JON

I just measured the wrench and the O D is 3.25". The wrench fits into the opening with a little room, maybe a sixteenth on each side. I guess the opening is about 3 3/8" to 3 1/2"

I also recently picked up a '85 K100RT (without owner's manual of course) so I get a Clymer manual and see what is needed to change the oil filter....jeesh a special tool? My R-bike didn't need a special tool, just a special filter.
Anyway I saw mention of a NAPA filter equivalent in this thread. Any other brand equivalents out there? And did I understand there is an oil filter tool I can get without driving 35-40 miles to my nearest dealer?
Happy riding!

I did a google search on motorcycle oil filter and one of the sites that popped up was:
http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html
For the K100 it listed the following:
Purolator PL10241/PL25230
Mobil1 3330
Amsoil SMF122
EMGO 10-26740
Fram PH6063
Purolator ML16825
He highlighted the top three on the list as recommended. Any comments?

Hello,
The following was copied from http://ibmwr.org/
Six oil filter manufacturers for K oil filter
Date: Tue, 8 Jun 1999 19:01:50 -0700
From: Roy Truelsen <royster@worldnet.att.net>
As info, the pressure relief valve on the BMW oil filter is rated at 9-11 psi, same as the Fram 6063. The Fram 3614 is rated at 9-12 psi.
Other alternative filters for the K-bike include:
Amsoil ASF-57
AC Delco PF-53
Hastings 157A, LF157
Motorcraft FL-271, FL-793
Purolator FCO-201, PER-241
Wix 51348, 51785

Caution: the construction of the Fram 3614 filter may have changed.

Regarding the "Alternate Oil Filters" for a K-Bike, specifically the Fram 3614, you may wish to add a note that Fram has started putting a "sure grip" coating on the bottom half of their oil filters.
Anyone wishing to use a Fram 3614 filter should make sure that it does NOT have this coating as it tends to DISINTEGRATE in the oil pan of a K-bike (and R-bike?). Upon changing my oil today, there were many black flakes of plastic at the bottom of my oil pan.

Hi,
The OEM filter is a Mahle OC-91. The early Fram 6063 filter was a repackaged Mahle OC-91. The last one I bought wasn't. It was quite different in looks and was made in Italy. That said, other than the OC-91, the Fram 6063 is the only filter which says it is for the BMW K-bikes. Unfortunately, in my eyes, it carries the Fram logo. The Fram 3614 WAS a "will work" filter, especially when Roy wrote his message. Since then, Fram has coated the outside with some black, gritty stuff to give a better grip. Since, for our application, the filter is INSIDE the sump immersed in oil, I don't want the possibility of the coating coming off and circulating inside my engine. If I used a non-OEM (or 6063) filter, it WOULD NOT be a current Fram 3614.

Be careful when using the Purolator oil filters. I had purchased the proper size oil filter wrenches. last week when I was changing the oil The wrenches that had put the filter on wouldn't take it off ( I tried three different sizes just to make sure it wasn't human error). I don't know if the oil filter shrunk or the size was just a little smaller than it should have been, but I had to remove the oil pan to lock onto the filter to unscrew it. I put another Purolator filter on just to test and see if it does it again on me.
The following is a list of will fit filters for the 'Bricks" prices are questionable due to age. The Bosch is what you get from Beemer Boneyard.
I have personally used the Bosch 72161 and Purolator PureOne PL10241. Have had no problems using the BMW filter wrench.
