Hi. I am a new member and I just received the Anon book. Is it Ok to contact the local riders who have KK next to their phone numbers?

Thanks for your thoughts.

In 1996, I moved to a small town in Mississippi and used the book to find several locals in neighboring Hattiesburg. When I made the call, I identifed myself by name and as a newcomer to the area, and asked if he would share some general information -- where and when does the local club meet, things like that.

I did not try to arrange a personal meeting with anyone. But I later started attending the local meetings and eventually became friend with several riders in the area.

I am accustomed to walking into strange crowds and introducing myself. But if you have reservations about the approach, you might just ride over to the dealership on Saturday and join in the ruckus. It is more of a "neutral ground" approach.

And welcome aboard.

I see that you are also a Yankee Beemer. Try to make it to a breakfast meeting at Stone's. That is a great place to meet folks as well. If you are an old-timer YB than just disregard this. Welcome!

It might also be good to simply put a post out on the forum saying something like...

"Gatherings in {your location here}

I am a new member and want to meet my fellow club members. When is the next get together near {location}?"

It has worked succesfully before... the forum is actually a pretty good place to meet up with people.

Welcome and feel free to look around.

I love to talk to people if they are new BMW owners or new arrivals. That's why I put "KK" in the Anonymous.

I know that some people might not like to be called up and asked to converse. I also know that some of our kind are not especially concerned with manners or human relations in their phone calling.

We (MOA), are a large, somewhat dysfunctional family, but we have a good time together. I just ask that we treat each other with respect. If you have a problem or a question, then you should feel free to call a member to help. You should also realize that you are using a resource that we have when you make that call, and our resources must be nourished and preserved.:thumb

Amar,

I can't see how anyone with the "KK" code in their listing could have a concern with someone who comes across as polite as you do - respect is a valuable resource. I checked that block because I enjoy meeting other BMW owners and riders (might have also been one of the reasons I joined BMW MOA too).

Maybe you could look at it this way: If you called to talk about motorcycles, it might be saving some of our family members from having to constantly listen to us ramble on and on about them! It is a good thing you are doing for family harmony.

BMW MOA members are always welcome on my telephone!

Don

Hi, Amar!
I rode with you partway home on 495 after a YB breakfast meeting last year. :wave
I think the whole KK category was for social purposes, and since you're up closer
to NH, it might be a good way to find more local folks and maybe even
someone who knows great local GS roads!
Anyone who is thoughtful enough to be concerned up front with
ettiquette shouldn't have a problem at all.

The OA members who list KK are soliciting coffee and conversation. So on their end, they are putting their name out for the purpose of meeting people like you, and with Irene's observation above, it's a match made in heaven.
