does anyone know what the cell service is like in and around Gilette? i am a currently Nextel subscriber who needs a new phone (mine is old and not working right) and my contract is up. i spoke to Nextel yesterday and they do not have service in Wyoming so i a looking for a new cell provider. i am leaning towards AT&T because at some point i would like to get an Apple iphone, but i am also not ruling out Verizon. anyone have experience with cell service in Wyoming and if so what service were you using?

Altel (midwest wireless) had 4 bars in gillette, and I think they roam on verison. On a side note, my wireless signal was there very strong.

The author of this thread raises an interesting question. He had Nextel; another poster had Altel; I have U.S. CELLULAR, and also am wondering about service.

Perhaps someone IN the Gillette area could take a moment to peruse the Yellow Pages for that corner of WY and list the cellular phone companies, so all those contemplating attendance will know where we stand.

Thanks.

I have had Alltel for the last few years and have been pretty happy with it. The National Service ($39.99 per month-500 minutes and toll free nights and weekends) gives me good coverage almost everywhere I go and I can talk to another Alltel cellphone anytime with no minutes charged for either party.

I had no problem with service from Verizon when I was in the Gillette area. I've sent a request to one of the local members for their input. Since we're all so computer literate :type you can also check dexonline yellow pages.

I'll let you know what Jeff reports.

Thanks

Thanks - excellent site. With a little creative cross-checking, I see that though U.S. CELLULAR is not directly represented in WY, they are supported by Verizon, which is located there.

Ergo, I do not anticipate problems should I end up at the Rally.

Thanks again.

All hill and mountain country seem to have dead areas here and there OR service that goes in and out like an AM radio.

Seems it works better if your near a ski area, don't know how that works?:doh

From a local contact, looks like Verizon and Alltel are the primary providers.

I will only worry about cell coverage if an emergency comes up. The only person I would call :heart is planning on being in Gillette with me. :)

Yes, this is the most common. At work we have Verizon, here myself I have Alltel. In Gillette, itself service is good. Richard

It isn't to bad unless the outlaws or indians have cut the telegraph lines......:rofl . Yes we have cell phone service in WY, and if we don't soooooo what!!! Your supposed to be having fun riding bikes not talking on your cell phone.

Verizon is my provider of choice they have reasonably good service on all the main arteries through out WY.

I drove thru SD, WY (including Gillette) & MT last summer and had decent coverage (AT&T Nationwide) in most populated places along the Interstates. There were a few dead spots but not many - mostly in the middle of nowhere. Gillette signal was good as I remember. Hwy 2 across northern MT had no coverage for miles and miles and miles..... it felt ----- liberating!

It almost sounds like you will base your choice on whether a provider has service in Gilette, WY. If I were you, I'd base my choice on service in Westchester County, NY and other places I spend a lot of time. :stick :)

Marilyn is correct. Just because a service provider (i.e. AT&T) does not SELL service locally in Gillette does not mean that they do not provide service for their subscribers. Usually they have regional network partnership agreements (I'll let you share mine if you let me share yours). Buy what works best for you at home - but ask to see their nationwide coverage map. Make sure the map is for the service plan that you have - not all plans give you all coverage.

Good to know that Verizon is good to go. I have my cells and aircards with Verizon.

both AT&T & Verizon have excelent coverage in my home area so either one would work just fine. i choose Verizon because they seem to offer the best coverage nationwide, not just in my home town, Gilette or any place else i will be traveling.

Don't count on Sprint service. I checked their coverage map and its all roaming.

At least when I was there in the Fall. I got a call (job offer) while in a meeting inside the main building. I remember it well, I wasn't quite ready to start working yet.
