Figured I would ask here to get some input... I have a possible recording/film job for a few days at the end of March in Phoenix AZ, March 31 through April 2nd or so.

Was seriously thinking about riding down from Upstate New York and turning it into a mini-vacation.

What's the weather like that time of year in the area? Is it a mess or should I think this is a good idea?

Do it!

Just make a plan B in case you have a problem along the way. Know your closest airports en route, and who flies when and where so you won't miss your show in the event something goes pear shaped.

Riding across country on someone else's nickel is always a good idea. Orlando to L.A. twice in 06 for me. Better than an Airbus any day.

Sounds like we have similar lines of work. If you can do it and bill your client, then by all means do. Some guys dream of having the chance to ride like this. This is not the time to be selfish. If not for yourself, then do it for our brothers chained to a cubicle. Think of them every mile. Do it in their honor. :thumb

I would expect that once you're in the greater Phoenix area, the weather should be pretty decent. of course, getting from NY to AZ might prove a bit more dicey. Early April in the north could be fine, but it could be crap. Watch the weather closely, head south as soon as possible, bring warm (electric) gear, and hope for the best.

It will be nice in Phoenix, maybe some wind. There could be some dust storms, but it's not like the movies.

You'll probably find the weather all across the US not unlike that of NY that time of year. It could be nicer in through the central states if you get far enough south, but it's also tornado season! Not that tornadoes are really that big of an issue, it's all the thunderstorms that could hamper riding.

Once you cross the mountains in New Mexico, you should have pretty nice weather. But a southern crossing through the southern end of New Mexico would just about guarantee nice weather. Albuquerque and Flagstaff can still get dicey in early spring. After all they are about a mile +/- above sea level and the flat land is just as high through the area.

One last note, check you're mileage and plan on getting saddle sore!

It is in the low 80's right now. A little early this year. Hit 84 in Yuma today. Had the a/c on in the truck. End of March should be great. North of the valley (Flagstaff and on I-40) you are in some elevation. Lot of snow right now, and it is a guess as to what it will be at the end of March.

It is worth the ride if you do it. There are many routes you can use. So. Az will be great, and a good number of fine roads to ride and places to see.

The weather in Phoenix at the end of March will be in the high 80's; getting here from Upstate may be another story. My family in Saratoga Springs say its a mess!

If you can get here before March 30th monkeywork, please join BMWMOA Club #89 for our Annual Spring Fling Ride to the top of Mt. Lemmon outside of Tucson.

All the information is at the link above, and, is also posted under Chartered Clubs.
