View Full Version : Sledge hammer solution failed

Our recycling container was frozen in about 2 inches of ice and snow due to our recent blasts of crap weather.

I had to get this immovable object out to the street.

It would not budge after my repeated attempts to dislodge this beast by trying to wiggle it and alternating body blows.

Brilliant thought: use a sledgehammer on base of cart and wheels to break the seal between the ice and bottom of the cart and wheels.

What ensued could have been a trailer for a Marx Brothers movie (no, I am not dissing the Marx Brothers). First, the hammer head snapped back because the side of the cart was like a drum head. Second, towards the bottom, I punched hole through the cart. Our cat, observing through the window, gave me round a standing applause.

I then decided to boil about 3 gallons of water, and pour the water around the wheels and cart to loosen it up. That partially worked, then I had wiggle the cart back and forth to the point where the ice let go.

Finally, one good yank got the cart out...and I go down on snow and slush.

Is it not amazing what the California and sunbelt riders are missing?

This thread is useless without pictures and in spirit of the progression of the MOA video should be offered. :stick

I am glad no one including small animals were harmed in such a difficult operation.

82 sunny degrees in Big Bend right now. I know this is not what you want to hear, but nanny nanny boo boo anyway.

What goes around comes around.

In the heat of summer the corn in your fields will start to pop and cover the ground with several inches of popcorn. Texas cows will die of hypothermia because they thought the white stuff was snow.

Even I know how to avoid that problem. You lay down a piece of recyclable cardboard between the recycling vessel and the snow/ice you are putting it on.

The other option is to send the wife out to get it :)

Did I mention it is snowing here at the moment and recycling is tomorrow?

Yes, it was beautiful, and I had a great 25 mile ride today to work and to home (home was in HOV before 7, that was a sweet way to beat the traffic).

Jamming, I am on the cafe, too.

Well, I finally got the ice chipped and scraped from my driveway. Now if I could only figure out what to do with the couple inches of ice on the street. I haven't seen my street, dry, in about 6 weeks.

I got pictures. This one is a few weeks old. The piles of snow have grown to ~6 feet last time I checked.
