Do you think this will make shifting difficult? Should I hold off on riding for a few days? Should I actually be happy that we received 6 inches of snow, last night? Were the injections into my toe worth working from home for most of the day, today? Do you think going riding on Sunday when I already had toe issues was a bad idea? :ear

I posted the non-gory pic. The other side doesn't look so healthy. I'm a little afraid about tonight, when I'm supposed to soak it and then remove the bandages. No major pain, yet. Still, I doubt it's going to look better when I have to see it, later.

Overall, a good thing I'm not missing out on riding. It was hard enough using the clutch in my truck, let alone trying to shift a bike. I need to look into one of those things Gail posted...

I'm really enjoying some of the comments!

I managed to partially smash my toe. That led to the toenail growing weird, and it essentially became the old standard "ingrown" nail. It got infected, but I had to go to Cali for work, so I was unable to see a doctor. It continued to not heal. By the time I saw the doctor today, they told me it would need to be fixed immediately (infection and other nastiness). That led to needles in my toe (numbing it - slight pain with the needles, especially the one that went in the BOTTOM). After that, she did some things. I won't go into details for Tessler's sake. You can look up the procedure, but I suggest not going to Wikipedia to look for such a thing because it contains graphic photos. Even *I* didn't like to see them. Ugh. I still have most of my toenail, so that's a big plus. I'll be set to ride in two weeks, and I doubt the weather clears much before then. If it does, I'll just pad my toe and deal with it. :D

I have to take the bandages off pretty soon; not looking forward to THAT. Soak, bandages off (in the water/epsom salt), then dry, apply antibiotic stuff, then re-warp. Repeat in the morning. Twice a day for 7 days. Add to that some antibiotic pills. This is a good week for me - I get to have my top two wisdom teeth out of Friday, as well. At least I'm not losing riding time. My priorities are JUUST right, as always. Riding first, health second. :p

Josh, I had my wisdoms out a couple of years ago and dental surgery has come a LONG way! Would you believe that I spent less than 45 minutes in the chair for all four and I had ZERO pain or swelling afterward? I had the GOOOD drugs- started on N2O then went to the IV-coctail of Versed & Demerol...ZERO memory of the procedure but the doc says I was awake. Be sure your doc uses the really cool socket-dressings from France...don't know the name, but they are basically blobs of something rubbery with tiny fibres mixed in. They adapt to the socket's healing and come out on their own when ready.

Same basic experience last week. Everybody telling me how awful it was and I also had no pain or swelling. Doc even gave me Vicodin (want to be cool like House) which is still sitting in the med chest.

And cheer up, it could be a prostate exam.

Had mine out 30 years ago. I was put under and don't remember it being that bad. I had swelling and laid in bed for a day, but nothing serious. Sounds like things have come a long way.

Now the question: Is Josh tough and ruthless or rough and toothless?

I appreciate the positive words about the wisdom teeth. I can deal with a lot, but I have MUCH trepidation about having anyone doing surgery in my mouth. I have no issues with the dentist, though. Weird. They are telling me it will take 20 minutes, and that's it. I'm having the top two removed, and both of them are fully "in", although terribly crooked. They are making my top teeth go out of alignment (ruining my expensive orthodontic work) so they have to go. I'm happy that a scalpel probably will not be needed for the procedure; though I'll still likely have some stitches. In good news, I'll still be on antibiotics by then (for the toe) so that really reduces the risk of abscess. I'll be happy to be finished with it. The waiting is worse than anything else.

I just finished unwrapping my toe. It's good I had some beer earlier, because I was rather nervous about it. All I'm saying is the water I was soaking my foot in started out clear. It was tinged a different shade by the end. :sick

It actually doesn't look as bad as I expected. I was thinking "ran my toe through a chipper". It actually looks only slightly worse than when I went in. No real pain, either. I'm letting it dry before re-wrapping and getting into bed. Good times. :)

I suggest you call the oral surgeon's office this morning and tell them what happened and what medications you are taking.

I have no idea if it would have any bearing on the procedure but if it does I am sure they would prefer to know today rather than Friday morning.

Glad you were able to hang on to the toe nail as i remember reading that without them standing and walking become much harder as it is what keeps the end of the toes from becoming little mushy useless stumps of squishy flesh and it is what you "push' against with each step since the bone ends a bit shy of the end of the toe. In fact it is toes themselves that are what give you the ability to balance at all or walk.

Interesting and important little guys, they are!

(and no, I DON"T have a toe fetish, thank you very much! Ha Ha!)

but I did date a doctor once, well until she refused to make house calls anyway...:bolt

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone. In 12 hours I should be finished with the removal of my top wisdom teeth; assuming everything goes on time. I'm just finishing up my last bit of eating before midnight hits. :)

I'm getting less worried about it as time approaches. Soon it will be over and there will be no more anxiety... that will be nice. :)

I checked with the oral surgeon; the antibiotics I'm taking for the toe won't be a problem. In fact, they're probably helpful. The toe continues to improve. I just received a new pair of riding boots today. I was able to get them on and then go sit on my GSPD. They are MASSIVE boots and the toe box is strong enough that I could probably shift without hurting my toe. Nice! :thumb Of course, we're getting 2-4 inches of snow tomorrow, so it's probably not a big issue right now.

Hopefully I'll be posting on the forum after I get home tomorrow, talking about how it "wasn't that bad"... or I'll be posting high on Vicodin or something. :hungover

Hey all!!!!!!! I made it out, alive! :)

I was pretty calm until I sat down in the chair, at which point my heart rate was running about 120bpm. Oops. They started to give some nitrous, but that made my lungs feel like they were closing up (Asthma) so they went back to straight oxygen. Then the IV went in, quickly followed by the drugs. My face flushed a bit, and I started to get a bit dizzy. I thanked the doctor, anesthesiologist, and nurse. Next thing I know, I'm in the chair, but almost everyone is gone except one nurse. I sat in recovery for about 5 minutes. I remember everything from that point.

My face isn't really numb, but my gums are numb, and the whole roof of my mouth is numb. Weird. I'm a little dizzle still, but getting around without much trouble. I'm carefully eating, and knocking back a Mountain Dew.

They didn't put any stitches in, and there is also no packing. Apparently it went pretty well. No drugs for me, aside from advil as needed. It was suggested I start that right away, though. I'll probably pop some in a few minutes.

Technically, I COULD go to work, but I won't... mostly because it's snowy, and being dizzy is bad for driving. They told me I can have beer any time I like. ;)

I'm SO HAPPY it's done.

Thanks again, all!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you made out okay, Josh. You should have your wisdom teeth pulled by a military dentist - novacaine only. Mine weren't impacted, or they might have done more.

Shingles on my back was some of the worst pain I have ever had in my life. I have had surgery on my big toe twice, and I would take that over shingles any day.

There is a shingles shot - and well worth getting. I got one as some of you have said, the pain can be horrid - and can hang out for years.

I had a slight setback. My left side was doing very well; no bleeding. In the meantime, the right side was bleeding excessively. Back to the oral surgeon I went. He put some packing in (some self-dissolving gel/foam thing), re-numbed that side, and put a stitch in. I didn't have any pain, but I'm a bit concerned now that the packing is in. We shall see in a few hours. I guess if this is the worst of it, I'm still doing OK. At least no more bloody mouth...
