I have the fiberglass/plastic BMW cylinder head protection on my GS and want to add crash bars. The BMW motorrad rider's equipment site has a notation that the plastic head protectors "may not be installed with engine guard bars" although it looks like the aluminum ones can be. Anyone know why? I seem to recall a photo somewhere where both were installed. Maybe the plastic guards were modified?

(If they are not compatible I guess I will settle for the more expensive Touratech ones which are).

Suggestions appreciated.

Some aftermarket bars are compatible, some are not. Try searching a GS-specific forum for more detailed information.

All of the above comes on the GSA, so why not for the standard 1200GS? My newly purchased, three weeks ago, GSA1200 has all the above in place, from factory. Aluminum valve cover protectors seems very stout and should do a fine job. I did not know they were also made in plastic and these would not be as tough, but probably better than nothing. Anyhow, the GSA has crash bars around the engine with aluminum valve cover protection covers. Kind of nice, indeed. I hope to not fall, but its most probably inevitable as a dirt rider for life:). Check out Hepco Becker. I have been told excellent protection by a friend to got a change to try them out. They survived and so did the bike. Little touch up paint and good as new! You can buy them from Sierra BMW or Twisted Throttle.

I have the BMW bars and plastic cylinder head protectors on a 2005.
No mods to either

Its funny I was told that the Aluminum ones would interfere with the bars.
If you use your local dealer you may get them to toss in the install just to be sure.

The scratches on the plastic are why I bought the bars.
I have parked stupid and dropped it on the bars; they do protect the heads .
Cant tell you if they work at speed.
