I have a 2000 R1100RT and am removing the front wheel bearings.
The Manual says heat up the wheel to 176 Degrees F and pound out the bearings using a brass punch. Can a press be used without the heat?
I know this is sacriledge, but I am chroming the wheels.
Will I be able to use the bearings again?

you should heat the alu. hub to remove the bearing.it is after all a shrink fit assembly.use a commercial heat gun to do this (electric fan type).it took me about at least 20 minutes to get the hub area hot enough and then still a hammer to drive the old bearing out.i would get new bearings for reassembly plus make sure no chrome gets into the bearing seat.if i ever had to do it again i would completely strip the wheel and put it in an oven.

And what's so sacrilegious about chrome?
(BTW, you better be posting some more pics in the near future or you'll have some 'splaining to do)

Here is where I am at in the process. The valve covers and side plates (where the foots pegs mount) have been chromed.

I will post the progress in its entirety when finished.

I used a heat gun/paint stripper (($35) and infrared temp sensor ($35)
Took maybe 10 mins/side to get up to temp max. Was kinda fun!
You can crack your hubs if not hot/ expanded...don't chance it!

Rob, I'm anxious to change my bearings on my 2000 rt. How does the drift work on such a small shoulder of the bearings? It seems like the amount of bearing sticking up past the spacer won't allow much of a tap...or am I confused, and the heated hub lets go of the thing easily? I know you did this awhile ago, I hope you can help.
