I have taken apart my speedo to fix the gasket and drill some holes for venting. When I pulled the odometer knob out I found the spring and washer, but no clip for holding it all together and no rattle indicating there was one.

What type of clip is this that holds the spring and washer on to the shaft?

Any pics?

I plan on taking mine apart to replace a bulb in the next couple of days. I can take a picture and post it then.

That's great! My mechanic is itching to get my bike finished as Spring is approaching. He's going to do the reassembly.

It's a small "C" (AKA "E") clip.. http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?pagenum=3194

It should be in the cluster somewhere since your knob hadn't fallen off..

We thought that's what it must be...but seriously my mechanic/boss has that whole thing apart and it's just not there. It may have gone flying somewhere, but now that we know what it is he'll be able to figure out how to reattach it.

Thanks for the help...

Mel.

Mel, these are notorious for coming off.. even without disassembly of the cluster. Once you get the new C ring for it - I'd suggest epoxy to make sure it doesn't come off. It's not like you ever have to remove the knob... you just pull it out to get the cluster apart..

Holding the knob in my left hand - with the shaft facing right..

Knob, [case,] spring, washer, clip. the spring pulls the knob against the case.
