I am a Canadian rider in the process of acquiring an American R1150RT 2004.
I recently noticed that the RTs imported into the USA have something that looks like a muffler. It is located on the right hand side of the motorcycle under the seat.
Can anyone please identify this item and tell me what purpose it serves?

The part you are refering to is a charcoal cannister. It is part of the EPA requirements for USA models. Many people remove them from the bike. They are there to collect gas fumes from the fuel tank. If you overfill the tank and raw gas goes into the cannister it will affect how the bike runs. I removed mine as soon as I got my bike.

Hiding the Carbon Canister is a good reason to ride wth luggage.
When it works, it does recover gasolines fumes that would have been lost to the air. They say is theoretically improves gas mileage. I doubt you could measure it, but at least it makes the air better. If the carbon breaks up it can enter the engine, which cannot be good.

Man! You folks are fast and thorough.
To be perfectly honest, I had a hunch it had something to do with emissions (more than likely California-related).
In that case that cannister-puppy will be coming off chop! chop!
Many thanks with all the comments and suggestions.

I noticed one of the good folks above attached a picture. I tried to "attach" my picture but never found the right button in the edit menu. Hence, I ended up having to use a hyperlink.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Pictures are indeed worth a thousand words.
