this past week i've been doing a transmission swap on my rs. an external bolt on the trans was a loosened by mistake by a very tired me. when the bolt backed out it brought the threads with it.

it appears that the bolt is open to the transmission on the inside so if i have to tap it what would be the procedure for cleaning out the trans at that point?

any other ideas?

not the greatest pics, but you can get the idea.

It most likely didn't bring the threads out; that bolt holds one of the oil baffles in place and there's thread sealant on it. It really does seem to take the aluminum threads out but it actually doesn't.

As long as you didn't loosen the second one, you should be able to simply reinstall it. If you loosen the second one and the baffle shifts, it might be really difficult to get aligned again.

If you have to tap a through-hole in a sealed casing, what you do is coat the tap in heavy grease, insert it, turn it a quarter turn at a time, backing off after each quarter turn. This keeps the chips small. They catch in the grease (hopefully). Withdraw the tap carefully. Inspect the hole and use a toothpick or cotton swab or other suitable tool to remove any grease-coated chips you can see.

If you are REALLY concerned about having lost chips into the sealed case, you would follow the above procedure by draining the case, replacing the drain plug, filling it to the brim with kerosene or mineral spirits. Maybe drain the solvent and refill with fresh solvent two or three more times, depending on your level of paranoia.

I guess if you are really paranoid and SAW a chip go in, you could drain through a coffee filter until you catch it.

Then reinsert the drain plug, refill with fresh lubricant, curse Murphy's name and GO.

the threads are gone. it wont reinstall. it looks like there are threads left but the bolt doesnt hold.

if it's holding an oil baffle i'm guessing tapping the case isnt going to help.
any suggestions on a next best step?

The threads are in the steel baffle plate. First poke a pointy thing in there to see if the baffle plate is still positioned with the threaded hole directly behind the hole in the case. If so, try to thread a longer bolt of the same pitch in there just to see if it can be done.

Maybe this will help you visualize what's going on:

It's not shown in the fiche AFAIK.

wow, thanks for the pic. i've been looking thru manuals and fiche and haven't found anything that showed the part.

next time i'm passing thru your area dinner's on me.

"pointy thing" shows that the baffle is still lined up. off to the hardware store tomorrow for a longer bolt.

just an update.

last night i was able to get some garage time. with a new bolt and the brake lines moved out of the way a bit better i was able to get things as they should be with ease.

it looks like i had the original bolt a bit lopsided and killed the start of the threads.
thanks for the help guys.
