Thanks, Burnsz. You are exactly correct. I've been "snaked" at least twice (by the same person!) and have had to delete my photo only to go search for another. To my way of thinking, this element of challenge just adds to the fun!

OK, actually it is a lookout platform on the side of Seneca Rocks in WV You can walk up the back side of the rocks thru the forest to get to it. and it is actually not tilted as it looks. Great optical illusion. A famous rock climbing place as well as tourist attraction. This is the view from the upstairs outside dining room at the Front Porch Restaurant where we go to grab a bite to eat during the Fof event at the rocks that I now host.

Unless the hump on Quassimodo's back was his stash of marshmallows I'm stumped on the association between Notre Dame and a camp fire.
Anyone?
Quassimodo, retires so the job is advertised. A real ugly guy turns up, but has no arms.
How will you pull the rope?
I'll use my teeth.
With no better candidates he's taken on.
Day one he grasps the rope with his teeth and pulls. The bell swings. Just at that unfortunate moment he developes lock jaw and can't release the bell rope.
The rope and bells collide and the bell smashes the novice campanologist from the top tower and he plummets to his death in the square below.
Where'd he come from? Dunno?
Who is he?
Dunno, but the face rings a bell.

#86, 87,88, 89 All have the horse theme, but maybe to the horse lover, the replicas are so accurately proportional to the real thing they are beauty. Several of the pictures both real and sculpted, are drawn together by the positioning of the horse's heads, showing off the beauty and power of the horses upper profile. WOW! I love Dean's shot of the little boy , fence and his horse, showing the innocence and dedication put forth by that kid, and sort of explains us adults with love affairs with the equine!
Maybe it's just me, but each captured the very essence of the equine, and explained the connection with the BMW (The sculpted horse and the RT? shot) motorcycle.
The cow? Hmmm somebody going to have to explain that one to me! as Desi Arnez says "Lucy! You got some 'splainin to do!!!

There's a couple of possibilites. The fact one woman is the centre of the crab pic and there's one woman in the bird pic.
The dried fish hanging is fish food for the bird, as the crab was fish food for the people.

That was one of those lucky shots. It's a lava tube on the big island.
Click on the image above for the exif. I shot it with a Canon S330 (2 megpixel!) and, I was surprised to see, a 1 second exposure. I was on my honeymoon in Hawaii, so I know I didn't have a tripod. I must have balanced it on my knee or perhaps a hand railing. The tunnel is illuminated, evenly as it turns out, so this was not too hard. I've got quite a few lousy tunnel shots myself. There is an element of that to be sure.
Sometimes a photo is followed by something, seemingly so radically different, that it's hard to follow the association (e.g. Burnszilla's palm). Other times someone posts a photo of pretty much the same thing that he's taken at a different time. I find both interesting/amusing. It's fun to say, "Hey, I've been there," especially if it's somewhere unusual.
The following are ALL great posts. Please note that I am not criticizing or saying that anyone did anything wrong or right. But this discussion is interesting to me.

Very different picture, people playing in the surf with technology (surfboards). Obvious thematic connection, but a different picture.
None of these is wrong or less inspired. But it is interesting to note what connection is made and why. Both the literal and the liberal interpretation have merit, of course. I don't know exactly what makes these "free association" threads so appealing, but they really are fun. The one over at dGrin is on page seven-hundred something and going strong. I love mining my photo website. I have nearly 10,000 images, and every time I look at someone's image here, I go to my mental filing cabinet to search for an image that reminds me, in some way, of the one that inspired me. Sometimes it's, "Hey! I was there, too!" Other times it's, "I've got a predominantly orange picture somewhere. . . ."

They must have gotten a deal on those guns, Gail. The ones I posted are just up the road in Bar Harbor and look to be from the same foundry. Now I'm curious and wonder how many more there are in the area. Time to explore some more...
Have you seen the new bridge at Fort Knox? There's an observation deck up there in the far tower. It wasn't open last time I went by there.

Here's a link the new bridge construction. Last time I went over the rickety old bridge before it closed, it was behind a cement mixer. Not a good experience on a bike...

One of the satisfying by products of these threads is when you search for the postable picture, you almost relive the moment (time/place), you took the picture.
The contributers to the thread have a cache of pix and I'll bet most haven't gone back into them, but for this thread.
#412 was in the middle of a Euro solo tour thru Western Italy/Sardinia/Corsica to Venice. I had wanted to have an Afagato in front of the same restaurant on the Plaza San Marco in Venice, that I had on my first Euro bike tour in 1970.
I wanted to visit the quarries in Carrera to see Marble production. I'm in building & I sculpt so my interest was strong. Here I was 4 hours after renting a 1100S in Milan (traveling in my true solo fuggawi fashion) in the middle of the mountain, I heard tinkering. Chiesal on stone, sculpters were working in the area. I got off the bike to head to a tarp they were working under to ask where the plants were. I don't speak any other language than a poor English, but I've learned to point well.
There were 4 or 5 and I approached a young gal chiseling. In my best loud (they understand you better), halting English I asked where the foundries were. In perfect English she said further up the hill. Huh. where are you from, I asked. Pennsylvania she said. Hmmm small world. They were an American group taking sculpting lessons.

Cleveland....what a fascinating river town....lots of industrial stuff, drawbridges, steel mills etc. I had one brief 4 day business trip there in the mid-80s. Spent a whole day wandering the city with my Nikon F2.
Nothing like that up here in the Anchorage area...I miss being able to photograph old buildings, industrial areas, machinery, etc. I cut my teeth taking photographs of the mills, warehouse district, etc in Minneapolis before moving to Alaska 20 years ago.
This was one of my early scans from a 35mm transparency using a now retired Canoscan FS2720 film scanner. Come to think of it, the Nikon F2s are mostly retired now too.
Here's the color version.

Sorry Rags, I there is no way to explain the religious aspects of untangling the malfunctioning steering gear in a 50 year old 70 foot steel tug boat. You would have to talk to the vessel owner, my older brother. I think at least some of us prayed a bit in hopes we would not be stranded over night on that steel beast! Needless to say we did not finish the tug boat race heat (600hp and under) we were entered in.

I just figured out the "cookout" part... I am so slow these days! Tooth infection... (good excuse?).
It is a Mercedes Bus, German Co that makes Tours. The poor driver of course drives and also cooks! The german tourists (30 of them) do help. They sit up front during the day and sleep in those cubicles at night and do campgrounds for showers and so forth. Cheap... for one month including airfare $3000 (from Germany). But... much cramped... I had met the same driver in Yosemite... this picture was in Big Bend and he recognized us!... well, Spirit anyhow... Their African Tours sound interesting, same vehicle but all wheel drive... expedition type bus...

The Delta, near Sacramento, is very cool to ride. I would leave in the am GPS off and just ride and get lost totally using my sense of direction (unvaluable...:laugh ) which is impossible because of the bends throughout the channels! Ferries, bridges... Even the locals still get lost, only the old timers don't! If you have a chance great place to spend a few days...

Must admit to getting a touch of vertigo on the way into DV with those exposed edges.
It was the start of a ride from lowest point to highest. I failed on the highest due to inclement weather, but did cross Tioga Pass instead; I'd crumpled at the sight of it on the Unchained across the USA ride, earlier. So a personal achievement. I still get vertigo on edges though, so kill or cure didn't achieve either.

Ar those crackles (sp?) We have tons of those that live in the Wildlife Preserve behind my house. Every evening they flock in the trees right at the edge of the development and raise a real ruckus for about 10-15 minutes then almost on que they all go racing off home to the Preserve then every morning repeat before flying off in all directions for the day, only to return at sunset and do it all over again. The sky is literally black with birds and the noise is increasable and its always right at the same time every day, I set my clocks by their flocking!:laugh (Ok, so maybe not THAT precise, by still...) My name is Tom "Danger" Moran. There are no lengths I won't go to in order to get "the shot." Interesting turn of subject from Toms photo of the harbor, I saw it and thought cranes at first, then boats and then I remembered the photo taken at the other banks NC last spring on my ride back from the Cape Fear 1000 and thought Hmmmm, which lead to the wooden poles theme as that one seemed the most subdued or least obivous feature in Tom's post.
I wonder if boats or cranes would have come out of that one by Tom had I not choosen the sand fence pic. Interesting, and I really like the follow up posts...:laugh

Yup. that's my understanding..
Hey, is that a toilet seat on the box?.... Hahaha...
That's called "The Unit", as in "I'm going to go use the unit". It's a army surplus rocket box modified to accommodate a standard toilet seat. The rest of the containers hold kitty litter to help manage the smell, a box of Clorox 2 to help manage the smell, and rolls of toilet paper.
Talk about a room with a view!
So the funniest story I've ever heard regarding a "unit" goes like this...
A party left on a 21 day trip down the length of the Grand Canyon. All full-canyon trips leave from Lee's Ferry, just downstream of the Glen Canyon Dam. About five miles into the trip, the river flows beneath this highway bridge.
http://dvandkq.net/images/05022004-015.jpg
After pushing off, the trip leader realized he forgot to include a toilet seat for the unit. Knowing that a rocket box without a seat would be uncomfortable - especially for the female passengers - he used the satellite phone to contact the support team who had just pushed them into the river. The driver of the support van raced to the gas station just west of the Navajo Bridge and ripped the toilet seat off the toilet. He raced back to the bridge and launched the toilet seat off the bridge and into the abyss, where it was recovered by the boats on the trip and used for the duration of the trip.
I never heard if they replaced the toilet seat they "borrowed" from the gas station, but it's a fun story to tell around the campfire while on a river trip.

dvandkq that 's a great story.
I'd love to see a picture of the gas station owner after the first gal asked about the seat.
Hey, is that a toilet seat on the box?.... Hahaha...
When I floated the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon a few years ago the rule was that you had to tinkle in the river (river water is drinking water but it's sanitized, and they let the sediment settle out, too). This was easy for the men but we women had to sometimes do acrobatics to hit the river. It's so dry there that if you peed on land, it would stay for a long time and smell. If you've ever hiked the trail from the rim to the bottom and smelled the donkey pee, you know what I mean.
The "solid stuff" was deposited in an ammunition box with a toilet seat on it. You knew someone was using it if the roll of toilet paper was gone from the bushes at the entrance to the toilet area.

I manged to transform a throw away picture to something mildly usable.
Lisa took this picture from the back seat of our borrowed car as we headed into the city. You can see the car windows reflecting in the sky. I wasn't as meticulous as I could have been cleaning it up, but it's ok for a 10 min job
- I rotated the original 5% to get it straight
- I toned down the blue, added a little contrast
- I cropped it, but that left a piece of blank sky in the upper right
- I cut/copied some sky from the left to patch that
- I used the clone tool, spot healing and blur tool to remove the car window reflections

We leave our hat on a conspicuous branch along the path to the unit. Occasionally someone will forget the hat and wander off to explore something. That's always well-received by everyone else.

I'm not sure RM did his, but in general you can do this effect in photoshop. You make a second layer of your picture. Set one layer to B&W, then you either use the history brush to reveal the color object, or you delete the object from the BW section, revealing the color layer below.

As SheRidesaBeemer said there are more than one way to do this. I masked out the flags then used PS to remove the color from the layer but with the "mask" on the flags they were not affected so after removing the masking layer they retained their color.
and thanks, it from my Poem "A Walk Among Hero's" that was taken in Arlington Cemetery of a honor guard I saw on one my visits there.
