My grandfather... Standing outside the plane built that one and one other in his backyard.
If you think it looks like a Piper Cub it does. Piper stole it from him.

Look at some articles here. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jim_popper/sets/72157622412527322/)

Wow! That's an amazing story. Thanks for sharing! Do you have the full story on what went on with Piper?

I don't... I'll have to talk to my Uncle and see if he recalls.

I do recall everyone saying it was a big thing at the time.

It was even hoisted up onto the store marquee of Gertz Department Store in Manhattan.

Here's mine.

Well been on a few Beach tours, in '99 we went on a "once in a lifetime" tour and became Alp-aholics, so we went again in 01. The addiction just got worse so we rented bikes from Rob in 2004 when we took our three boys over for two weeks. Would have loved to do the official tour, but they were only 20, 22 and 24 and the wife rode her own for the first time in the Alps, so I needed to slow down the pace some, and $$ for 6 people and 5 bikes would have hurt even more.

That pic was from 2007, when I played assistant van driver/guide for three tours with Rob. As you can see it was a big tour and he wanted a 2nd guide bike rolling,so Al and I shared that "tough" job. :D

Rented from Rob again this summer and wife and I spent 10 days in the Schwartzwald/Alsace region. It is in our plans to try to do the Fall Italian tour with him this coming year.

Thanks, James. That photo was taken last year during what my wife calls "The He-Man Women Haters Tour" that my son (14 YO at the time) and I have taken since he was 11. That day was absolutely perfect- about 68F, just a few beautiful white puffy clouds...honestly, it just couldn't have been any better.

That particular trip has been the best so-far. Instead of moving constantly, we "based" for a few days in different areas and rafted, rode the Durango train, hiked, and etc. We based in Gunnison the longest, as there were two other families staying at the same motel that had a total of seven teenage girls between them. Go figure..:heart

No, it's in north central Arizona, crossing the Colorado river. If you know where Marble Canyon is, it's just south of Page and Glenn Canyon.
By the way, it was a very memorable ride. Scenery was the best.

Marchyman, what kind of mount is that for your V-1??

marchyman

Marchyman, what kind of mount is that for your V-1??

It was a RAM mount. I got tired of being alerted every time I passed a shopping center and removed the V-1 a while ago. Lets see...

http://www.cycoactive.com/gps/other_mounts_ram.html

scroll down about 1/2 way to GRSP3H (which is actually the Street Pilot 3 Handlebar) mount. Now picture velcro all over the round part with the other half of the velcro stuck to the bottom of the V1. Wiping both the mount and the V1 with an alcohol swap then letting it dry helps make the velcro adhesive stick. It stayed stuck for many years before I got fed up and removed it. (The CHP did not need radar to issue me the only ticket I've received on the GS :whistle).

For mounting to the thin rail on the GS I added GRAHA: RAM Crossbar Adapter for GRAH... see http://www.cycoactive.com/ram/parts.html about half way down the page again.

Now back to talk about pictures.

That's what I like. The closeup of wildflowers with the mountain backdrop -- everything is in reasonable focus.

I can't stand the shallow DOF shots that are all the rage . My eyes don't see that way and I don't want my camera to record that way. I find it's not as easy to get around the problem (what I consider a problem) with digital cameras as it was with film cameras. And yes, I understand all about aperture and DOF.

Constructive discussion welcome...

GrafikFeat

Folks use DOF usually to hide distractions.
It also evokes a 'soft' mood.

My eyes don't see black and white yet I love Ansel Adam's work.

There are times and places for all effects.

That was taken with an early generation Digital, or "film less" camera as many refereed to them in the late 90's.

That was a shot from a Nikon Coolpix 950. 2.1 MP. Before all the software advances, there was a large choice of manual settings for a "pocket" camera. I was stuck on top of a mountain waiting for weather clear and allow me to jump off it on a para-sail. So I had some time to play around and get what I wanted.

That's what I like. The closeup of wildflowers with the mountain backdrop -- everything is in reasonable focus.

I think Brian Peterson in his book "Understanding Exposure" says it well. To paraphrase: Sometimes the photographer wants to tell a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. That calls for narrow apertures and large depth of field. Other times the photographer is looking for a singular theme and uses wide open lenses and very narrow DOF to block distractions. Finally there are times when the photographer doesn't care -- the "f/8 and be there" mantra of old news photographers.

All three methods have their place.

There is no rule that says you have to like what the photographer produces. :)

That's true enough. So is it just me, or are F/22 apertures unavailable on digital cameras?

Tom, given the very short focal length of these lenses, the small size of an f/22 aperture would probably cause severe diffraction problems. Plus, with lenses of those focal lengths, you don't need f/22 for great depth of field. You get it with f/8.

Depends upon the camera, or more properly, the lens and sensor size. A P&S with a 1/3 sensor and a lens focal length of 6 mm will have the same view and DOF as a 35 mm full frame with a 43 mm lens at an aperture of f/29. Those numbers are from the calculator about half way down on this (http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/digital-camera-sensor-size.htm) page [cambridgeincolour.com].

f/22 is available on the lens I usually have attached to my Canon digital SLR. However, on that camera an f/16 is the rough equivalent to a 35mm full frame f/22.

Sure. In the mean while... Canon 7D (replaced a Rebel Xt) with a 1.6 sensor.

EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 USM goes to f/22, f/29 at the narrow end.
EF-s 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM goes to f/22, f/32 at the narrow end.
EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM goes to f/22
EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM goes to f/32

The 17-85 and Rebel Xt are on the shelf, waiting for my wife to make up her mind if she wants to use a big, heavy SLR or stick to her P&S.

Not my photos, but this is what I thought.

6120 had white truck with a white building as background. 6121 had a white RT with white snow as background. It had the white association thingy going on.

6121/6122/6123 all had "Washington" on the signs. I thought 6124 was political commentary about what's going on in Washington DC.

Might just be bad free association on my part though.
