Duplicate! Duplicate! 1018 is a duplicate! :stick :D
Ha Ha! I'm beginning to worry about that myself, sometimes I have to think " did I already post this one?"! You'd think with over 12,000 photo's on my lap top (not to mention all the ones on my backup drives) you wouldn't think that should be a problem, would you? Course you have to consider that of those maybe 10% are on web site those being the ones that I thought were anywhere worth sharing!

When I was a kid growing up in Southern California, we'd see the exhaust plumes of the rockets the Air Force and NASA launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base. I don't know if the guvmint still does that down there, or if the columns of smoke are still visible from the L.A. basin.
Wish I had been old enough to think about photographing the views I remember from my childhood.
That, and the brush fires that came up to our back yards - with helicopters landing in our cul-de-sac and our street flooded with fire trucks.
Fun times in SoCal.

I had actually thought about that but after printing it out and editing out the sign post I liked it better with the top part left in as I liked seeing both parts of the reflection and the cars in the background don't really stand out as much as I thought. Its the pond outside where I work. I also noticed when looking at the large print I have in my office that the muskrats that I thought had just moved in have been there since winter when this was taken. You can just see their lodge in the middle of the reeds, the little bit of white is the top of their den.

its actually pretty kool to have the pond right there at work, we have all kinds of critters living in/around it, I esp. like to watch the crane strut around the pond when he drops by to catch lunch. A comment on the posting in #1234.
While the photos can speak for themselves, many times the associations can't. As you can read in this thread. In addition some posters are curious about where the place is in the pic.
If the association is strained I label it. If it is of an architectural/natural unrecognized wonder, I label it.
Exclusion of text entirely perhaps does not serve the viewer/poster. With that in mind I suggest allowing labels for the benefit of the viewers.

I suggest that's what this thread is for.
How do you know a location isn't recognised, unless someone expresses it here anyway?
Treat the image association with any degree of thought and then it becomes more worthwhile. Just showing a tree because the pic before was atree isn't an association, it's a duplication. Likewise adding a picture with the only association being that yours is a picture too will be pointless.
It's associations...thought provoking and not always immediately obvious is part of it.
Keep the labels where they belong, on the inside of clothes. And keep the explanations of your cunning genius to this thread. I suggest.

I share this opinion. If the association is so tenuous that it needs an explanation, it's not an association. That's part of the "game," if you will. It's a bit like having to explain a joke. If you have to explain it, it ain't funny.
Having a commentary thread gives us ample time and space to comment, question, explain, etc.
The thread is yours, however, and you must do what you must do. I sure do enjoy it and am amazed at its popularity.
Have you ever clicked on the number of respondents? It lists them in order of frequency of response. That's pretty interesting, too.

My compliments to 7557##, for having an image on Free Association that Torag didn't add to, for as we stand, at least a 1/2 day.
I hope Torags isn't ill or something, as in a world of uncertainty, Torag replying with an image of his own, within a fraction of a moment, was one of the constants I found stabilised society. Four Torag images equalled a hard boiled egg, three kept the yolk runny...

It wasn't an accusation, I just wondered if you'd knowingly used a picture to comply with the association for more than one association, for example a tower, for a building tower and a tower for a sandstone stack?
I hadn't noticed an occurance, but I have sensed that the themes seem to be following a pattern, hence the preponderance of animals, water, mountains, buildings, bikes, people. Whilst the direction may change, we do seem to cycle through these themes. I suppose it's because they are what most of us take pictures of.

Additionally, when you're on a trip in a different culture, it seems the architecture (for example) has the same flavor. You take a bunch of images sort though them and notice patterns ( at least I do)
There were a bunch of shots, from someones Chinese trip and I really enjoyed them, since I've never been there. I take what I can from the game.... hopefully I give value for value received.

I'm sure that even were you to, for one instance, lack value (whatever that may mean in this context), the volume would compensate, as you are somewhat prolific!
And long may that continue...

With so many pics being posted, but the themes cycling, I guess there might be an element where the familiarity of topic could cause folk to think a duplicate was posted...but if you shot 20 pics of the same thing, then that's 20 different shots, not one picture replicated 20 times.
As with all shots, some are more "enjoyable" than others, that's irrespective of the shooter.
I'm just amazed at your tenacity Torag.

What has "evolution" - not abiding by the OP stipulations because you can't be bothered or believe they don't apply to you- deemed is acceptable, and to whom?
Is it selective?
And if it is, is that fair?
We also had pictures that people hadn't taken themselves...isn't that an evolutionary step too. It certainly seems to have as much legitamacy as adding text, as the stipulation saying it shouldn't be done was in the same OP that is getting ignored.

1. cause any embarrassment to the guy
2. not have to include even more text in a text free zone
Perhaps you feel that your amount of posts give you some different level of input than anyone else, some sort of ownership?
Eitherway, my concern (substitute whine when it's contrary to your opinion) is that there were a set of criteria that we set off with, that noobs can refer to and therefore if we expect them to adhere, so should we.
And, if your words "were too many", as you point out, obviously you do believe there's a limit we should apply...what is it, so we can all join in?

1. Hypocrasy
and
2. Arbitrarily deciding what is best for everyone else, because it suits you.
Oh and
3. Attempting to demean someone elses points of view by using derogatory and dismissive terms like 'whine', when your arguement has no basis.
This thread was set up as the place for text relating to Free Association for exactly one purpose, to eliminate text from the photographs.
Now either approach the Mods and ask them to change the OP specs or live with what you joined in, voluntarily and in accordance with those specifications.
Alternatively lay out what is expected of anyone new
"You must not post any text until such a time that you feel you have established some form of priviledge which excludes you from compliance. This point will be when you feel appropriate and will not be questionable. At that time you can just make up whatever rules you like".
What was decided about including other people pictures by the way?

I guess what I've been trying to say is I don't feel strongly about having rules for the free association thread because it is there for fun and I don't find rules fun. I have not gone back to look at the original post.
I think it has been assumed that we are posting our own photography...

I hadn't memorised the rules. I hadn't referred to them. I hadn't known what an OP was, until it was brought up recently. It was bringing them to someone's notice, in public, that first made me look and that's why I thought "what a cheek"
rule breaker, turned rule maker.
Sure Torag is in every way a great person, but that smacked of hypocrasy.

What Gail said..
the photography forum is (or at least was concieved to be) a place for sharing your visions of the wonder and beauty (and oaccasion oddity!:D )of the world around us
this has gotten WAY off topic, discuss the photo's in the Free Assiciation Picture thread and leave the "attidutes" at the door, they will be there upon your departure! :stick
So please folks, lets not let in any "spillage" from the "outside" creap (creep(?)) in here, OK?

Here is the original post:
This idea is blatantly stolen from a number of photo forums, including dgrin.com. It's a lot of fun. Someone will post a picture. The next forum member should post another picture that reminds him or her of the first in some way: the subject matter, location, color, shape, theme, or other association. The idea is similar to free association in Freudian psychology: "I will say a word, then you say the first word that enters your mind." Instead of words, however, we use photos.
Example:
Photo 1: two guys riding their GSs off road
Photo 2: children playing in a sand box
Photo 3: a sandy beach
Photo 4: a surfer catching a wave
Photo 5: a rider carving the twisties
Photo 6: etc.
The photos may have been taken at any time, but they must by your photo taken by you.
NOTE: In order for this to work, you must respond to the photo immediately preceding yours. Part of the challenge here is timing. Please do not respond to previous photos--only the last one in the thread. Responding to images further back breaks the continuity of the free association.
This works best if the photos speak for themselves, so please refrain from any text. If you want to discuss any images, please start a photo association discussion thread.
I find that that descriptions, and other text detract from the spontaneity and creativity of the thread. The whole idea of this thread is to let the photo speak for itself.
I'm not complaining, I prefer the thread as it was intended to be.

Hmmm…. It seems like I have become a lightening rod for someone’s grist mill.
It seems Lamble has taken a lot of time and research to develop a strategy to enforce the rules, while singling me out.
The thread has been fun. I didn’t realize the rules were so rigid and I don’t think most of the active posters did. Lamble admitted he didn’t remember the rules until he found an articulated basis to throw a wet blanket over the activities of some folks having fun.
The convention in landscape photo forums is to identify the place of the photo. I have used posted photos to plan trips to the place and as a result have found value in my lurking. I was hoping that would be the case here, however the “game” took me over. But I appreciate knowing what the picture is about and I get a chuckle from some humorous quips with the label. But that appears to be against the rules, I mean it’s like….. fun.
The thread was one of the most successful threads outside the vanity thread, post your mug. It seems to me it was the result of intellectual engagement and curiosity of where/what the subject was about. I think the root bound rules will keep the thread from flourishing, as it would a tree in a 5 gal bucket. If I would have noticed the restrictions I wouldn't have posted.
I didn’t want to become controversial so I just won’t return. Hell, I’m going to Baja to shot the race at the end of the month and I’ll stop at Yosemite, Mono Lake and the Salton Sea on the way down. I better pick up some 4gig cards, I’m going to take a lot of pictures.
It was great fun playing with the active posters and my favorite was the bud series. See ya’….

Wow, martyrdom and the injured party ploy.
It was fun and flourished before you started posting, it was fun and flourished while you were posting and I dare say it will continue to be fun and flourish, irrespective of the rules and probably because of the rules too. The idea is so good.
As I've said, but you've chosen to ignore, I don't care what the rules are, as long as they are the same for everyone and that if the Mod who set this up is happy to change to suit the majority then so be it. When you become the majority, let him know!

I suppose an alternative would be that the Mods supported the rules they wrote and made them clear for all to follow, which I thought was the case with this forum. Everyone happy to abide with the specs that were laid out by you guys, they are clear and simple.
No one has suggested anyone should leave. This additional thread was even set up to support those with a need to write where pics were taken, or to pass comments on images. Everything has been done to accommodate people.
The popularity of the thread is unquestioned, the fun aspect for some seemed tainted by the addition of text (me for one but not unduly).
So the compulsion to leave rather than adopt what everyone else has, has to be an individuals choice. It's not been enforced, insinuated, or requested even.
It boils down to,"I don't want to play the same as everyone else, so I'm taking my ball home".

I was surprised to see that early posts that I had made with attached images were gone from the thread. The follow up photos (that are linked to external sites) are still there.
Does anyone know if there is there a limit on the number of attached images I can post? Are they deleted after a certain amount of time?
I imagine the Photo Association thread is consuming a lot of bandwidth and storage space.

"I don't want to play the same as everyone else, so I'm taking my ball home" that's not really how I see it at all, and I'm nottaking anything away, this is afterall an area for you, the members, its not mine, not now or ever was.
sorry you feel that way but here it is from my perspective.
When someone kinks sand in your sand box you have two options
One: you can ask them to leave or
Two: you can leave.
The first (and really only time) that someone kicked sand in this sandbox I asked them to leave (i.e. banned them) for a few days and for that I received an almost endless rash of sh*t. I was insulted, my integrity was questioned and someone even went so far as to suggest the very person I had banned was someone I should look to for how to behave in a professional way!!???
So when I saw what I considered a rather silly and pointless argument, with a few (minor) insults thrown in, in this, my favorite area, I figured I would post a reminder of what this forum is about. That didn’t seem to work too well so..
I am left with option two, leave, at least for a while and see how I feel as time goes by.
Understand that its really not about this forum(and I want ensure you guys know that it is NOT about the photo forum!) as it is the (other) forums in general, in fact I have always felt this area was the one calm harbor in the storm, which is why I was upset to see this thread go so far off topic.
The simple fact of the matter is that I have this odd idea that adults should act like, well, adults, but in all too many threads in the other areas, I see them acting like or worse than, spoiled children that just can’t resist throwing sand or picking arguments or starting fights at the first opportunity (and seemingly for their own amusement in many cases). Quite frankly I don’t need that in my life.
To me the job of a moderator should be to lead, to ensure threads are in the most appropriate area and move them if they aren’t, answer questions, guide those new to the forum and should only occasionally have to step in when things go a bit astray, rather than having to act like a school marm and break up fights in the schoolyard. When their role becomes one of having to tell adults how to behave like adults, it becomes old rather quickly. I have no interest in being a policeman. I guess I’m just too much of a nice guy to want to play that role. Bottom line, when it stops being fun to visit the forums, why bother? And right now with all the bitching and moaning and those folks who simply can’t let things go, it is no longer fun. And the idea that I have to wind my way between the crap to find the good just isn’t worth it, there are plenty of other places to hang out where I don’t have to be bothered with that.
It boils down to this:
If I have the option to walk in an open field full of fresh green grass or an overgrown cow pasture, well, I’ll take the grassy field any day!
So there it is, take it any way you want.

Let's get back to discussing the pics here folks.
And, lets keep the pics to pics, it makes the associations more rewarding when you have to work out what they are.
On the pics, take a look at the OP again, the association works best when the pics move the associations along and don't just repeat the subject matter as the OP example indicates.

Let's say you and some buddy's from your local club decide to go for a ride together. One guy decides to lead and says that you're heading to the beach and then stopping for ice cream. You all agree that is a good idea. As you're riding, he decides he's hungry and stops at a burger stand for lunch. What do you do? Do you demand that you all leave the hamburger stand because it was not what the plan was? Do you order a soda and look forward to getting an ice cream later. Or do you get on your bike and ride on to the ice cream stand alone and vow never to ride with those people again because they are so fickle? Do you contact your local club and demand that all further rides arrive at the destination they set out for as planned?
I tend to roll with the punches in matters of little or no consequence.

Good point well made. My point is however that if I were to join a ride where the leader had said well have a lead and a tail, and then the lead decided not to lead and everyone went there own way, you'd no longer have a group ride.
I took a quick look at your last three text supported postings. And I came to a conclusion that it must be a cultural differences thing...I don't get it, the interest or humour thing. A picture of charred trees, with text of "Charred trees" A pic of ducks with "quackers" a pic of the camp site being constructed and text saying it's a campsite.
If these are examples of text that need to be there, then surely they'd work if posted in the text thread against the reference to the picture.
Pic 12345 charred trees in Australia or wherever, pic 4321 ducks quacking in a pond. There is an avenue that's been set up where the thread can stay as was intended and anyone wishing to express themselves with the written word can do so too. Even expand upon the information with location, camera type, reason the pic is important.
As you saw , a few words of text, then become a few more, so we end up with a banter about chairs on a recent three or four pic sequence. It added nothing to the association of visual images of different chairs, which everyone could clearly see, without the need to read it too.
Let's get back to discussing the pics here folks.
Exactly.

I look today and see the shot I was responding to has been deleted. Why?
Had it not been there in the first place I would have replied to the speedo shot with something like this:

The rock of Gibraltar. An indomitable fortress. The ox is a true bulldozer. You are an essentially temperate person who cares greatly for rigor, labor, strength of character and?.. results! You can stick at a task longer and go at it harder than anybody. You spare no elbow grease. You hate to be beaten, so you simply never ever give up. Some call you slow, others complain that you are clumsy. In fact, you move at your own sweet pace and refuse to be pushed or prodded by a lot of hot-headed fly-by-nights. You believe in simplicity and achievement. Levity in business exasperates you. You are capable of profound, enduring love, yet romance leaves you cold. You prefer action to beds of roses and phials of exotic perfumes. You take life very seriously but life doesn't always return the favor. You don't normally talk much but you have a remarkable talent for story-telling. Ox's should team up with Rat's, Rooster's or Snakes. They are all well equipped to handle your peculiar brand of seduction. The first two eras of your life will be characterized by hard work. During the second adult phase a misunderstanding between you and a neighbor or colleague may cause a deep, long-lasting rift. Don't lose heart, your old age will be both long and healthy with peace of mind taking over after fifty. Advice? Lighten up, and stop judging others by your own high standards. You'll only be disappointed.
* Positive : The Ox can be patient, contemplative, skillful, dexterous, eloquent, confident, familiar, authoritative, industrious and sure of foot.
* Negative : The Ox can also be prejudiced, chauvinistic, proud, tyrannical, petty, critical, eccentric, bigoted, conservative, grumpy and on occasion violent. :dunno

IMHO..... (and it really is a humble opinion this time because I am new here).... I kinda like having the commentary on a different thread. You could say keep it to a one liner, but people don't read the rules. Why just yesterday a moderator slapped my wrist for totally disregarding the rules (that I didn't even read) on another board. I like seeing picture after picture without the text. Should be obvious enough how the progression from 1 pic to the next works.
I am new to this thread but am enjoying it. I know the idea was stolen, but it's a great idea!

I even turn my sig line off... It's just a check box when posting so it's easy.

I like the idea of turning off the sig line. Let's see if I can figure out how.

2993 to 2994?
Is the link, some white in both pictures or am I missing something deeper?:scratch
If it's "snow drop" then horticultural references need checking :laugh

3020.
Gentlemen, I'm sorry that the sculpture of the brahmin is so realistic in the men's downstairs sporting good department, but by painting the damn thing red and painting those eyes on it, I don't think realism was the first factor in the sculptor's intention. Therefore there's no need to feel inadequate in comparison, although feel free to shed a tear for the bull, I mean imagine lowering a few ton of weight on those every time you sit down.
Ladies, this has nothing to do with you at all and shame on you if you noticed!
And this whole thing was next to a child's play area, I mean imagine, "daddy, daddy daddy, what are those for?"
In actuality, I believe it to be an expression of multi-culturalism, but it's an ugly and incongruous thing at best. At worst it's a big red bull with enormous b@((s.

Hmmm...if those are it's "b@((s" as you suggest, where are its legs?

Well my red bull's anatomy skills might not be what they should be, but I'm fairly sure those large red orbs under the tail aren't legs. Not unless bull's legs are being designed by Dyson vacuum cleaner's bloke. :dunno

legs tucked under and at the sides, b@((s to the rear I think you'll find.
Just after this shot a small dog came up to the rear of the bull and...well did what dogs do do.

For a community to allow such a thing to be put in their park is just nuts.

3022,
Thank heaven someone found a pic to replace 3022. That's a horrible whatever it is...what is it?
I worried for a moment that it may have brought the whole thread to an end, or until someone took a picture of a mincer or sausage machine, or a squid!

Looking at it again I'm beginning to think it's the "elbow" of the right rear leg it's sitting on.

If your elbows look like that, I hope you only wear long sleeve shirts.
