View Full Version : Beer Garden Selections?

I was sitting here thinking about the great beer at last years rally- Leinekugel's, aka the Pride of Chippewa Falls. That got me to thinking about what local brews will be available in the Beer Garden this year. Can the Beer Meister give us an update? :beer

I also came across this article in the Rocky Mountain News from Dec 07. Looks like hotel rates aren't the only thing that will be going up......

Proposal would triple Wyoming's beer tax
Here's a tax increase sure to make people cry in their beer. :(

That's right: Lawmakers are considering a tax increase on beer, and proponents say the mental health and substance abuse treatment that would benefit are good causes.

Wyoming taxes beer at 2 cents per gallon. A draft bill before the Select Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse would raise that to 6.5 cents per gallon.

By volume, the tax on beer is low. Wine is taxed at 28 cents per gallon. The tax on hard alcohol is 24 cents per gallon.

But Wyomingites drink enough beer that the increase would raise an additional $607,500 a year, based on the $270,000 raised by the 2-cent tax each year.

speaking of beverages...what is the situation for those of us that may not be able to drink wheat/barley/rye beverages? I cannot eat/drink/inhale gluten and wondering if other beverages are available or if I can bring a flask for my own personal use?

We are still taste testing. A tedious process.

As far as price goes, prices are set by the distributors each quarter.

So how high is bottled water ?

Last year we had a thermos of ice water and cups available for free water, still bottle water out sold any of the beer brands.:buds

ha!

I mentioned it another thread, but it bears repeating here - I really appreciate the fact that regional beers are available at the beer tent. We are so fortunate that the rally organizers make an effort to make each rally a unique experience which embraces the locale. Bravo!

oh and MplsK100RT, I can't speak officially, but rally attendees have always been free to bring in their own food and beverages.

cool, because unless there are ingredient lists for each and every vendor I cannot eat much of what they will offer. It's unfortunate, but if I am still able to attend I will have to survive on bars and whatever else I can manage to cram into my side bags.

I have already requested that the beer team look into having some gluten free beer available. I'm hoping it works out for us.

Food at rallies is always a problem as most fast food is guaranteed be full of wheat. There was one vendor at West Bend who checked the labels for me and I did find something to eat there. :eat I always bring the bars and crammed saddle bags too.

I loved the two rallies I've attended so far. I would not dream of complaining about a single thing. All the hard work of the volunteers is massively commendable.

But if someone really *insisted* that I come with one area to improve it would have to be the food vendors. County fair fast food fare is fine and even fun for a one day event. But four days of deep fried carbs and red meat is a dietary disaster. We should be nicer to ourselves.

Granted, falafel itself is deep fried (and therefore delicious) but at least it is vegetarian and your typical falafel stand usually has other stuff which is much healthier than pretty much anything I've seen at a rallies I've attended.

I was thinking that if BUD is already there that they could get a hold of the GF beer that they make. There are a few other brands also, but I've actually never tried any of them. I stick to my Grey Goose and a twist.

I agree.
Many times food vendors have contracts with the the host facility. The group renting the facility can only use the vendors and products that the host facility have under contract.

Last year, after we had our Rally at West Bend, I attended the Washington County Fair. All I can say is "WOW" the Rally Chair did a real good job of picking the best food vendors.

New Belgium http://www.newbelgium.com/index.php is my personal favorite and I discovered a couple of their lesser known beers like "Skinny Dip" which is their Summer beer - New Belgium’s Skinny Dip is a full-bodied, figure-friendly beer perfect for the lightly attired summer months. Cascade hops frolic with kaffir lime and ample malt to create a bright, citrusy nose that’s as crisp as chilling in a mountain pond. Skinny Dip * a most revealing beverage.

Another favorite is "Blue Paddle" - Blue Paddle Pilsener, crafted without the use of adjuncts like corn or rice, explores the boundaries where American Lagers seldom journey. Reflective of Europe’s finest Pilsener’s, Blue Paddle delivers a refreshing bitterness, vibrant finish and a subtle but intricate depth of flavor. With Blue Paddle, we wanted to produce a beer that was definitive of the upper echelon. Peter Bouckaert and our brew staff drew inspiration from outside the world of Belgian ales for the generously hopped lager. Blue Paddle has a bit more body than the traditional Belgian pils and is closer in style to a Bohemian Style. High impact crispness from noble hop varieties finishes with a rich panoply of malt flavor.

:drink It's all Goooood

Unfortunately my other half has me on the Weight Watchers diet and all I'm allowed right now is an occassional lite beer. Fortunately she's not coming to the rally. :dance

I came across this on the New Belgium website. They are really into bicycles but thought I would toss this out there for the sponsorship committee. The BMW Foundation's Camp Gears might be a good starting point.

New Belgium's Sponsorship Program

So, you’re doing something good and you want us to join you? Excellent! Tell us about it.

We at New Belgium love to get involved. We sponsor a whole bevy of cool events and goings on throughout the western United States. And while we would like to align with all that is good and worthy, we sometimes have to gracefully decline.

A few things we look for when selecting events and sponsorship opportunities:

* TIMING: Yep, it takes time to get the beer there. So, start talking to us at least two months to a year prior to your event. For large events, we generally need even more time.

* BRANDING: It’s important that your event allows us to showcase what New Belgium is all about. We look for PLAYFUL, UNIQUE, and DELIGHTFUL events. We’re a folly following bunch, and we like to support fellow folly followers.

* SUSTAINABILITY: From brewing beer to building events, we want to do all we can to reduce our footprint. That’s why we partner with likeminded organizations. In addition, we’re very interested in events that support environmental non-profits.

* PARTICIPATION: We prefer to be hands-on and on-premise with events. So, if you’re pitching a logo placement, we’ll generally pass unless it comes with a chance to meet and greet.

* LOCATION: As much as we’d love to go to New York or Florida, for now, we have to wait. We’ll gladly consider events in the states we’re located. (CO, WY, TX, AZ, NM, AR, MO, KS, CA, NV, ID, WA, OR, MN, IA, MT, IL, NE)

* DONATIONS: Our sponsorship dollars have to reflect our brand. So, if you’re wanting a good will donation or philanthropic grant go to: www.newbelgium.com/donation-form.php

* TEAMS/INDIVIDUAL ATHLETES: Due to the overwhelming amount of requests we get to sponsor athletic teams and individuals, we decided it’s just too hard to pick. So, aside from a few family and friend’s teams, we pass on these types of sponsorships.

* BANDS: Ditto on the above.

If your event fits these guidelines, then fill out the following form. We’ll take a look at your request, and get back to you within a week.

http://shop.newbelgium.com/sponsorship-form.php

I just noticed this thread and just have to chime in as another attendee who is gluten intolerant. It is a problem when traveling and rally food is generally off limits. While it is possible to purchase gluten free beer locally sometimes, it depends on the area. I was in Tucson last spring and found one liquor store in the entire Tucson area that had even heard of gluten free beer - and they didn't have it. In other areas, Walmart carries Redbridge (West Bend, WI for one) but it would be surprising if anyone in Gillette has it. Unless the beer tent folks can locate a local supply, I think our adult beverages will be the kind you sip. Maybe the Celiacs should get together to share wine, brandy, rum, cognac, potato vodka, corn vodka...Hmm...maybe we're not so deprived after all! :whistle

At the west bend rally...if one wanted something other than beer you had to walk elsewhere & pay $3 or more for a coke...but if he wanted cheep beer...no prob. HOw about offering something for those who dont drink booze or dont wish to all the time!?

In West Bend the Beer Garden carried freshly brewed blond Root Beer along with wine and wine coolers for sale. The water was in the water-jugs on the table tops for free.

Most times the beer garden sells soda also, but the Coke prices were prohibitive for us in 2007. We opted to avoid the ridiculous pricing for the soda sales last summer by letting the food vendors handle all soda sales. Most food vendors sold the soda for $2 / bottle. And trust me on this ... at $2, those vendors were NOT making any money on that soda.

I preface this remark by saying I loved the root beer at West Bend, and drank quite a few in three days. But sometimes sweet soda pop does not even come close to quenching your thirst or cleaning one's palette!:drink

Especially if your over the age of 13 or so. My suggestion for the Rally organizers is consider brewing fresh ice tea, served side to side with the beer. Is it just me or does anybody else think it might just be a BAD IDEA to have a beer company sponsor Camp Gears, an educational program for new/young riders some of whom probably aren't even of legal drinking age.

I was not advocating the New Belgium sponsoring Camp Gears but the international rally itself and the money from the sponsorship of the rally could be donated to Camp Gears which is a non-profit and teaches safe riding for younger members.

As your Jan 08 ON article pointed out, targeted public information and education programs are a good way to begin reducing number of impaired riding accidents. Some beer companies sponsor education programs such as Anheuser-Busch's "Responsibility Matters" campaign. Why shouldn't beer companines support these types of educational efforts which should include the impact of impaired riding.

It would only be fitting if our vender served at least one German beer. Since our BMWs are made in Germany it would make sense. Rumor has it that they will actually run on a good German beer. Anyone out there tried it?

Personally I am trying to locate a pair of Leiderhosen to wear at the rally.

A good Polka Band would also add some international flavor.

Ideally, the beer garden committee would not screw around, and simply stock Summit Pale Ale. It's a Saint Paul brew that compares favorably with microbrews from Colorado and elsewhere. Saint Paul is not too far from Gilette, so Summit would be entirely appropriate.

Been watching the thread... a lot of good input. Since we will be partying/riding in the western states (WY is considered the "west"); here's my pitch for malt beverages:

1 New Belgian Brewing. It's been mentioned in this thread. Unique beers...their most popular being Fat Tire.
2. Coors. Brewed in CO. Supports a lot of WY farmers. Much of there barley is grown in WY. My suggestion is Coors and Killian's Red
3. Bud. Also brewed in CO. My suggestion is Bud Lt and O'Doul's (their NA beer).
4. For foreign suds. Heineken, Tecate....soooo many to chose from. I'd say limit to 2-3.

Now I'm thirsty....see ya.

Great beer, food, music and fun. This year's festival, the 19th Annual Colorado Brewers' Festival in Downtown Fort Collins will take place June 28 & 29, 2008. Over 50 Colorado beers and 400 kegs will be enjoyed along with great live music Saturday and Sunday in Historic Downtown! (The festival hours will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.)

The Colorado Brewers' Fest is made up solely of Colorado Breweries, including host breweries from Fort Collins: Anheuser-Busch, Big Horn Brewery/CB & Potts, Coopersmith's Pub & Brewing, New Belgium Brewing Co., Fort Collins Brewery, and Odell's Brewing

Thought I would revive this thread since we are 21 days out. Has the beer meister and committee made the final selections for the saloon? :bar

Very amusing that last year we went to Colorado and didn't venture north past Denver to visit any Breweries. We did however, go to a local beer store and buy several Colorado Beers and brought them home to Texas. Never thought anything else about it, just stuck them in the pantry. Well, guess what...in the pantry sat the 4 beers from O'Dells that will be at the rally. Guess what my husband will be sampling tomorrow???? :drink :laugh
