View Full Version : 96 RT idle gremlins

As my RT gathers more miles (73,000+), the idle is becoming somewhat erratic. Sometimes it idles fine, sometimes it is very choppy and sometimes the bike will die unless I feather it while I am stopped. Other than this problem the bike runs great, minimal surge at low speeds and very smooth at high speeds (considering the mileage).
TBS seems to help but only for a short while. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Oli,
The last time I tuned up my 1100RT I pulled the throttle body screws (for the first time ever) and cleaned them up. They were GUNKY. I was also having trouble with a stumbling idle and occasional cold engine stalling. The bike definitely idles better now, and has not stalled once. If you've never done this it would be worth a try.
As a bonus, the throttle bodies also balanced out cleaner than ever, with both of the screws backed out exactly one full turn. I also did a meticulous valve gap and adjusted the rocker arm free play. I don't remember the old girl ever running so sweet.

Thanks, I'll definitely give it a try.
