View Full Version : K75/100 Topcase Latch Fix?

Has anyone found a permanent fix or good replacement lock and latch mechanism for the cheesy one in the BMW topcase for the K75/100 that keeps popping open every time I hit a bump? This seems to be a notorious problem -- surely someone's come up with an ingenious solution by now.
Or any suggestions for a small, neat looking topcase that doesn't hang way out over the back and ruin the looks of the bike?
Thanks,
Diane

The problem is usually related to the el-cheapo plastic nut not staying tight on the equally cheap lock body's plastic threads. It has been suggested by others (I have not tried it!) that gumming up the threads with something non-permanent like silicone gasket sealer should keep the nut from backing off.

I use a El Cheapo black bunge cord. I have had to stop and pick up things too many times to care whether or not the bunge cord does not look cool....it works!!!

Before I switched to the stylish black bunge!:laugh
My wife made straps from black nylon webbing and plastic side release buckles. The strap was run under the rack so we would not drop it when opening the lid.
Here is a picture of the strap.

Setup latch so it Really Does latch, then silicone adhesive that stupid plastic nut both to the lock body & the shell back. G.H. <<<)))

Last September's trip to Nova Scotia fron Toronto on the first day, my girlfriend freaked when she discovered the lid to the top case had opened and her purse was gone, (it had her passport in it)! Pulling over on the shoulder wondering what a way to start my first long distance trip, I was surprised to see the lid still attached. After dismounting to calm her down, we found her purse. The shoulder strap must have blown around the lid before it blew out of the case for there it was hanging resting on the mud guard! Cheap @!*%? lock but bloody strong hinge and suports.:dance It never opened again during the next two weeks/5300km.

The latch/lock is cheap but not the problem. The problem is closing the lid thinking that the latch caught it and it did not. It happened to me many times. I think that it is latched when it is not, just appears to be closed all the way. I now check it every time I close it. There are times that I find I can lift the lid without pushing the lock button because it is not closed properly.
I use a bungee cord also just in case I fail to properly check the lid to see if it is closed properly.

If only it was that simple. Nope, I've triple checked it (tried to pull open) and it is definitely latched. I watched in my rear mirrors as I hit bumps and it will pop open. We've bent and adjusted everything in there as much as possible; happens even when it's empty and nothing could possibly be touching it or overstuffed.
Speaking of bungees, RokStraps has some new, smaller straps with plastic buckle that look perfect, so we don't have to make our own.

I have a 94 k75 with the standard top case. I have only had it pop open once and I think it was due to my not closing it well. Now when I close it I pull on the top to really make sure is is latched. I have not had a problem since.

I found the latch to work fine but you really have to ensure it is latched. Can fool you alot. I trouble shot the latching problem it is the rear hinge mounting to the very thin rear wall of the case. To fix beef up the back wall.

Mine latches better since I bent the wire part of the latch to take the play out when the lid is closed and to place the loop as far as possible over the hook while still being able to release the latch with a firm push on the release button. I've found the wire part to be somewhat prone to getting bent from things I stuff in the box. I like the idea of reinforcing the back of the box at the hinge to make the whole thing more solid.

I can't remember for sure. I think it was a Mustang cover, but my wife modified it. It started as a full tank cover, then Debbie cut the front portion to show more of the tank but still protect the tank from the tankbag and knees.
She did a nice job :thumb
